New Federal 7mm Backcountry “Ammunition Reinvented”

I am trying to learn about this new caliber. And am not promoting or selling anyone on it. And I’m certainly not selling all my 24” musket length rifles

This is just the beginning of this new technology. The military is moving in this direction. I’m guessing more manufacturers are scrambling to move this technology into other calibers.

Shorten the barrel with non magnum length actions. Heavy bullets. Same velocity as magnums. No need for lugging 24 - 26” musket barrels.

I know many shooter/hunters here in Canada are still trying to build or acquire a 7PRC from three years back, then comes all the new and greatest rave 280ai, guys pulling barrels off, selling, buying .284 barrels, trying to get them chambered or installed, waiting lists for months.

Now comes the Back country lol!!

These marketing people love u-tube and the hunting shows……guys gotta have the latest and greatest $$$$$$. If you can’t get 3000fps out of a 175gr bullet and make shots out to 800 yards…..buy the latest and greatest and it will do it for you just open your wallet and squeeze the trigger!

Likely stay with my 7x64, 160gr Accubond @ 2890fps and just get closer than 800 yards.

This technology came from the request of US army. The whole sales angle on this one is more of the ability to use a 18 or 20” barrel and get the same performance as 24 and 26” barrels. So when a can is installed it’s not a 58” long rifle.

Respect yours too my man! You’re a good apple.

I like seeing innovation. There will be a lot of swings and misses for sure. I don’t plan to buy this cartridge.

What I’m hoping is this tech gets to my predator ammo. Getting 3000fps from a 223/556 in a 16-18” barrel would be awesome.

Is that a typo? 3000fps in an 18"gas gun and especially bolt rifle is no issue to get?

77gr bullet. I get 2703 from 16” gasser and 2715 from 18” bolt. Of course you could shoot 50 or 53 and get that.

Modern bullet ballistics is with heavy for caliber. BC on the 50gr is crap.

Maybe us old Fudd's have something to gain here.

And, us Fudd's who are still holding our old 6.5x55's, 7x57's and .30/06's (which factories will still be making ammo for 100 years from now, as they have been for the last 100 years), can leave our children and grandchildren a treasure trove!

I shot an old iron sighted .30-30 yesterday, to make sure these 60 year old eyes were still working (happy to report, they are!)

Guess what? Every major ammo company in the US still makes .30-30, and you can buy it for about $16.00/box. (130 years and still going strong)

BTW - I need some Remington Etronx .243 ammo. Anyone have any just sitting around??? - Just kidding... (I didn't even have to think about that debacle to avoid it).

Well said! and I'm happy to report that all of.my rifles are chambered in cartridges that are.more than sixty years old except for the 7-08. Even that one is 40 years old. .30-30, .30-06, 7mm Rem. .300 Win and .458 Win. I expect my grandson will.be able to shoot these rifles when he gets to.my age and that's another sixty years.

I thought about this the other day. I’m only early 30s but my “youngest” hunting cartridge is a .44 Magnum (1956). I’m intrigued by the tech but have no use for it.

Let’s use the introduction of the .308 as the dividing line (1952). I don’t think any big game rifle cartridge introduced after that presents any significant advantage until you get further than say 500 yards. Then it’s the whole how far is too far debate. Which is a whole other can of worms.
