New guy in VA

Hi all. I’ve been lurking off and on for a few months now. I finally joined up the other day. I’ve always wanted to do a safari hunt, mainly for a Cape Buffalo. I talked to some guys last year at the GAOS in Harrisburg and got some info. Then, I won and bought a CZ 550 in .375 H&H last week off GunBroker. Getting things in order! Now, I just need to figure out where to go and whom to go with! Haha.
WELCOME to the Forum, lots of good guys on here and they’re willing share their knowledge - I think you will like it. Not sure how old you are but “Don’t wait” too long to go to Africa as the experiance (as well as the hunting) is unique. Plan carefully and in great detail - but at some point Your-Head-Will-Explode and then you’ll just need to make the final decision. Have Fun !!

Welcome, where in Virginia are you located?

Greetings OneGearhead,

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

When you get around to it, I invite you to have a look into the Khomas Safaris website.

Your CZ 550 Magnum rifle in .375 H&H is a very fine choice for Africa, including for so called “plains game”, especially eland.
It’s also excellent for Australia Buffalo plus, Alaska, Canada, Kamchatka, Romania, etc., grizzly hunting as well.
I have formerly owned several CZ 550 rifles in various calibers, from 6.5x55 Mauser through .500 Jeffery.

As for the set trigger in them, I choose to ignore it and so, I don’t bother setting it.
Without wasting valuable time setting the trigger, they just feel about like a typical WW-II era battle rifle trigger —> M-98K Mauser, Lee-Enfield, M-1 Garand, 1903 Springfield, etc.
And, I am quite fond of that military two stage trigger feel.

Anyway, for your .375 vs buffaloes, the 300 grain Swift A-Frame bullet has a formidable reputation for hunting such magnificent beasts.
As for scopes for all hoofed critters, large and small, I’m the weirdo around here who prefers nothing more than a sturdy (Aka: top quality) 4x, in low rings, with standard cross-wires, or duplex if that’s all that’s available (I buy most of my sporting goods 2nd hand).

I have hunted hoofed game, beginning in 1967.
So far, I have not even once needed a huge magnification power scope.
Neither have I ever needed one with batteries, lighted reticule, gyro-stabilizer, bubble level, range finding capability, wind speed meter, GPS tracking feature, barometer, thermometer, video game screen, internet connection, pandora music channel, etc., etc. LoL
Not talking about pest shooting, such as ground squirrels at distance.
For that, a larger magnification is of course superior.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!
