New guy - thinking about Africa

Africa is a wonderful place and is so different...sights, smells and sounds!

First Safari in 2017 @ 50, heading out for the 4th Safari in June!
Lining up another African adventure for 2022!

Starting off the first time can be daunting if you are taking your own guns but it can be done with patience and paperwork. If you have any questions about anything don’t hesitate to send me a PM with your contact info.

Greetings.

Short Version: I'm a life long hunter (56 years old, been hunting since I was 12). Just starting to get serious about Africa.

Long Version:
I'm a 56 year old duck hunter. I've hunted ducks with double shotguns of one sort or another almost exclusively since 1985. I’ve also shot deer (southeastern whitetail) my whole life but never really considered myself a deer hunter. In 2017, I began to take a keen interest in becoming a better deer hunter and killed a 146" whitetail that had initially gave me the slip on opening day. For the first time in the 40 years of my hunting life I began to think of myself as a big game hunter.

Just prior to last season, I treated myself to a Browning Express in .30-06. There's a certain continuity to hunting ducks in the morning with a break open shotgun then climbing a tree in the evening for a deer also with a break open double. Amazingly the only misfired I've ever had in four decades of rifle hunting was the first time I pulled the trigger on a double rifle in an actual hunting situation. The under bullet simply went click. Of course, double rifles are at their best when things go wrong and all I had to do was reset the inertia trigger by cycling the safety. I dropped the swamp 8-point with the over barrel at about 120 yards.

I'm immersed in a hunting culture. All of my family and close friends are hunters. The people I’m interested in are hunters. Hunting is my only pastime and only passion outside of a relationship with Christ and a commitment my own family. I exercise and keep myself healthy so I can better enjoy hunting. I take long, solo hikes to keep my senses in tune with nature. Heck, the only reason I work is to be able to afford to hunt.

Reading about someone else’s duck hunting was never interesting to me because I get to do it myself. That being said, Africa and African hunting has always held my interest but, until now, I never really considered doing it. The African safari was like my science fiction – an enjoyable diversion to the real-life things I actually get to do. Now, for whatever reason I’m getting serious about booking a plains game safari. I look forward to great conversations and great advice.

I don't have or want a trophy room. I want to bind a photo book of my trip with magazine quality photos something like...

...along with nature photos taken from my first African safari.
Nice Whitetail. Great mass and just a winning combination.
I am nearly 68 years old, and a lifelong Montana Native and hunter; however, I have wanted to go to the "Black Continent" my entire life. So, I did a lot of research over a couple years and decided it was now or never. I contacted Nick Bowker Hunting for information and pricing and booked a hunt for my son and his wife, myself, and my wife as a non-hunting guest since she does her shooting with a camera. Nick offers several different packages of 8 hunting days and 7 animals; totally inclusive from the time you land in Port Elizabeth, until you get back on the plane home.
I ended up taking the following trophies which included adding a Fallow Deer and trading some other animals out for other trophies. There was NEVER any suggestion or pressure to do so, it was totally my choice. In order of my taking animals:
1) Black Wildebeast
2) Gemsbuck, (oryx)
3) Impala
4) Nyala
5) Fallow Deer
6) Kudu
7) Waterbok
8) Warthog.
I chose to use Nick's top-of-the-line Saco .300 Mag with a BDC Swaro Scope including all ammo at NO ADDITIONAL COST. Believe me, the suppressor on the .300 makes it a dream to shoot. And it hits where you aim. I had 2 misses..1 before I understood how to range the scope (I didn't listen to Nick), and a shot at an Impala I simply pulled and missed, but I did get a second shot which did the trick.
Don't wait. The "fruits and nuts" are constantly trying to stop hunting in Africa; which I realized is one of the most financially important parts of the economy in Africa. In addition the meat goes to the many families that work on the farms.
I can't say enough about how we were treated by Nick, his family, and fellow PH Ben. I have hunted and fished with numerous outfitters and guides, but never was treated so well along with developing new friendships.
Something I will add is this is not a "high fence" hunt. The fences are only there to keep sheep and cattle in on this gigantic property, and they are in no way a controlling factor for the trophy animals. They are simply a 4 wire sheep fence that animals clear without any effort.
Go to Nick Bowker Hunting on the web and see what I am talking about. You will even see pictures of some of our animals (we only got back on April 10), including my sons beautiful Sable.
Good luck, shoot straight, and Go hunt with Nick...you won't be disappointed.
By the way, we are going back in May of 2023.

They are not going to talk you out of it.
There are African natives , veterans, one timers and dreamers here.
It didn't take long for me to get roped in.
I ticked the box and have hunted Africa.

Welcome to AH and the posting side! This forum has a wealth of information from some extremely knowledgeable folks, enjoy!

Welcome Aboard!!

I've been over 6 times, done 8 different hunts.

For a first plains game hunt I would suggest looking at one of the East Cape Outfitters who offer a good bit of Free Range hunting on large concessions with cattle and sheep fencing, but limited or no high fence. Especially if you want a great experience with beautiful scenery, be sure to include a trip to the Karoo and an early morning drive over to the Cowey region. And do the photos! Keep a few hides and skulls just in case you decide you want them. But foregoing taxidermy will allow many more hunts if you are on a budget;)

Wow - thanks everyone for the overwhelming warm welcome. Why did I wait so long? :)

Nice Whitetail. Great mass and just a winning combination.

Thanks Dave0712 - that was just a young 8 for meat - the only deer I've taken with the Express. Here's the 146", 216 lbs live weight which is about as big as they get in coastal SC...

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
