New member from Florida!

Good evening everyone,

My name is Forrest and I am new to AH.com! I was referred to you guys by Mr. Wayne from AHR.

As I’m planning my first hunt in Africa for hippo in 2026, I’m always trying to gather information on good outfitters as well as experiences and feedback from those who’ve been.

I’m also a collector of big bore rifles as well! Love them and get all I can when I can! Of course for hunting and practicality I have a Winchester Model 70 chambered in 416 Rem Mag which handles and shoots awesome!

Looking forward to reading and learning the content here as well as getting feedback from members!

Best regards,

Forrest
Welcome to the forum Forrest

Greetings TackleThis,

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Although I’ve never done so, taking a hippo on land seems to me that it might be just about as much excitement as a hunter could stand.

Even though the .375 H&H is my favorite hunting cartridge, for my safari dollars I would want a bit more gun for such an endeavor.
A .500 Nitro double with ejectors comes to mind, as does the .500 Jeffery bolt action and the .505 Gibbs as well.

However, I tend to prefer “more gun” than really needed most of the time.
With that, a fellow I know here in Alaska (Bob Barnes) used a Model 70, like yours in .416 Remington, for a big bull hippo on land in South Africa.
He said the .416 worked extremely well.
So, it looks like you are all set for your 2026 plan.

Anyway, glad you joined.
And when you can spare a moment, I invite you to have a look into the Khomas Safaris website.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Welcome!
lived in Tampa for years…have good friends up by you in Crystal River area that have lots of Africa experience
Interesting that you are focused on Hippo (dry land)
Shot one dry land last year. Haven’t seen anyone yet advise you on what this means relatively speaking. There is a lot to think about and what else you may want to do.
Not sure it is what you envision normally if I’m honest… lots of folks will chime in.

I was born n raised un florida basically lived at our camp in fiber factory hunt club, Mt dad was charter member, welcome

Hi Forrest, and Welcome to AH.com!

Your 2026 hippo hunt is right up my alley, we have some excellent hippo grounds in South Africa-perfect for your .416RM.

I too live in Florida, and have plenty of game to hunt close to home!
PM me to chat details
