Just wanted to share with everyone that I was able to pick up a new Hawkeye African chambered in 300 win mag. I haven't even shot it yet but I'm over the moon with this gun! I have to say I'm sold on express sights now. I can't wait to start hunting with it this fall. I'll break it in on whitetail but I'm hoping to give it the chance to take on eastern elk and hopefully more in the years to come.

Congrats on the new addition!

I keep thinking about picking one of those up in 300 Win Mag. How many rounds does the magazine hold? I think the Hawkeye African is better designed for the smaller calibers than the bigger ones, i.e. 300 Win Mag vs 416 Ruger. I heard it is light for them.

Congratulations? Are you reloading for it or shooting factory ammo?

It holds three and one in the chamber. And i could easily see that. Compared to the rem 700 I used to shoot in 30-06 this rifle is a lot lighter. Really fast feeling in the hand too.

Bought the left hand version for my son. Great trigger

there's a stainless one in the classifieds available from yours truly currently.

The 300 Win Mag African is not being produced (currently). Not sure if they will ever add new chamberings to the Hawkeye African Lineup. I think 30-06, 275 Rigby, and 300 Win Mag should be standard chamberings as the African seems like a good plains game rifle.

It is being produced currently as an exclusive run for the Shoot South distributor. It's available at buds gun shop as well as KY gun Co currently. It isn't listed on Ruger's website but is on the distributors and different dealers.

I had no idea! Cool! I wondered why so many of them were cropping up in my Gunbroker search and such. Thought maybe there was an issue and people did not want them. Glad to hear otherwise!

I can confirm that they are a fresh run and so far appear to be great quality to me! You are right though about it feeling like an ideal plains game gun.

Great find

Just picked up a left handed Hawkeye in 300 win mag. Havent shot it yet, still shopping for scopes. Can't wait to use it as my planes game rifle. I love the controlled feed and while not as smooth as my Tikka the safety is much better. I used to hunt deer with my Tikka T3 but stopped because of the safety, it would come off safe while slung on my shoulder. Averaged 10 times a day at least. Bought a Ruger Scout rifle and never looked back. Only thing wrong with Rugers is that they are almost completely excluded from stock and chassis companies to do upgrades on. H&S is the only company I know of that makes them for the M77 Hawkeye Gen II but not in left hand. According to them they are working on one and should have it out in the spring. I will be one of the first to order one.

Yeah what do these weigh? 7.75lbs? Pretty light for a 375 or 416.

Perfect for a 300WM, 338 WinMag etc.

Nope, the .375 Ruger African weighs 9 pounds 8.5 ounces with a VX-R 2-7X33 mounted and unloaded. The scope is 12.5 ounces so the rifle with rings is 8 3/4 pounds... it is trim and handles well... significantly less nose heavy as the RSM in .375 H&H.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
