Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I do not know very much about scoring hunted animals via tape measures and such.
That is not to say I have no horns, tusks and antlers on my walls.

Indeed I do have such wonderful memories displayed on my walls.
However, I am so dull that just the simple pleasure of hunting and fishing, to include preparation and eating of fish and wildlife meat is what I enjoy.
This enjoyment for me, is beyond what words can describe.

That said, I am glad you joined this forum because I have a great curiosity about the entire world.
And so, I hope that we can be forum friends.
I do look forward to your posts, as I suspect you are a very well adventured soul who has many excellent stories to tell.

Welcome to this great forum. Regarding CIC (btw I know nothing about this org.) going to do in India. As you may be aware there has been no hunting legally allowed in India since 1972

We perhaps see the CIC too much from a hunting perspective. The CIC has also taken other missions, including the conservation and use of natural wildlife resources. Maybe it's more about something like this, because trophy hunting is no longer possible in South/Southeast Asia and India in particular.

Yes, CIC is involved with hunting conservation issues at CITES meetings and other meetings. Their scoring system is hardly the main focus.

CIC is to my knowledge also the only pro-hunting, pro-conservation organisation that has diplomatic status and permanent seat at the table in the European institutions. They have quite some clout.

The trophy scoring is honestly more a side business.

Indeed. We recently got observer status at the UN, particularly due to the role played in the internatational agreements and conventions in recent years.

I always keep hope, that somewhere some voice of reason will open hunting again, at least on limited basis.
Indonesia, Filipines, etc.
Bangladesh has hunting options, but no known out fitters, etc

Have no idea if there is such initiative in India, but there are some positive indications - like culling of Nilgai or boars in India. I hope it may develop some day in some proper hunting options at least. Thats why I am looking fwd to some Input from our new forum member @Bhraaz Kashyap

The great animal i would like to hunt one day (after my cape buffalo hunt this year) would be Indian bison, gaur. But it is nowhere accessible to hunt although present in several countries in good numbers.

I don't hold out hope for that. I hunted in Malaysia several times in the 1990s and also tried to do it in other countries of South-east Asia. It's not Africa, the mentalities are completely different and so are the laws. In addition, there are cultural and religious problems as far as the wildlife is concerned. Ultimately, the main problem in all of these countries was the very strict gun laws that made gun ownership almost impossible for foreigners.

By the way, gaur is extremely protected and despite good game populations once again in some regions, its habitat continues to decrease. Hunting it would cause a worldwide uprising that no country in Asia would be interested in.

Of course- Earlier in 2024, I floated the idea of introducting the concept of sustainable use in the context of India, as I have a decent understanding of the working systems there. It seemed impossible; hunters of Europe either berated me and the country, or professionals had zero faith in it ever working out. Even from India, the very mention of hunting seemed to infuriate and get people riled up.
But the gorwing populations of man and animal within the country has shown a significant uptick in conflict rates. In a country 1 billion strong, the levels of tolarance towards such events even from people living in ground zero exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. But tolerance is never enough; people suffer and nature suffers.

So an exploratory mission was pitched by me- to gague the scenario of the country from the perspective of sustainable use of wildlife in conservation. The CIC's network is probably the largest in the hunting based conservation community- 1800+ members in 80+ countries. They have intergovernmental organisation status from the UN, observers at UNEP and diplomatic status in its administration country.
Furthermore, this network is perfect for giving a voice to the many shikaris and licensed sharpshooters in India protecting the public from nuisance animals.

This twofold approach is the mission. To discuss sustainable use with the govenment and to bring together Indian hunters to an international platform. The ideal outcome is to bridge the gaps among the conservation paradigms or philosophies down the line for a more holistic view on sustainable conservation benefits everybody- the hunters, the locals and the government.

Sounds good, but how practical this is to implement, is another question. If hunting is reopened in India, there will be an uprising worldwide. In the EU, on the contrary, some are trying to abolish hunting by any means possible.
