NEW ZEALAND: Safari 2023

I’m currently in NZ on a month long South Island adventure. I’ll keep details brief as I’m posting from the phone. First part of the trip was to Stewart Island. Chasing whitetail deer. Only 1 seen over 7 days. Numbers are down from my last visit when I shot 3.

Then it was up onto the South Island. Walked in with the son for a few days from the road end. Public land again looking for chamois, red and or fallow. No deer seen but saw chamois every day.

Then it was a Southland duck opening. A bucket list thing for me.

Back in town now. Resting and cleaning gear. Preparing for another trip bush. Weather forecast is crap. So probably another two days in town and then hopefully a solo hunt for a red on public land.
Anyway it’s a bloody great adventure. And these Southlanders are salt of the earth people.

Still in town waiting for a change in the weather. So took a drive to Milford Sound. Spectacular scenery, in between the rain.

The weather hasn’t been the best. Went and did a bit of armed bush walking in a close by public forest. Plenty of deer sign but nothing seen. My first time hunting that forest and my first time hunting and driving in snow. My conclusion…snow may look nice but I sure don’t like it

Was invited by a local fellow to accompany him for an afternoon duck hunt. I was doubtful it would happen as we had thick fog for most of the day….then just after 2pm the sun burnt off the fog and what a glorious day.

Speights IMO is the best beer in the Southern Hemisphere. A couple of years ago they gave away caps, if you bought enough beer. I got a couple they also promote duck hunting

it’s a great beer. The Monthies Black Well….it’s an acquired taste.
