IIRC, during the making of the movie Cowboys, John Wayne told Bruce Dern he'd be the most hated person [actor] in America.

IMPO, I don't think John Wayne nor Bruce Dern realized how bad the public's outcry for Bruce's head would really be. It wasn't so much as Bruce Dern's character killing John Wayne. It was the "cowardly" way in which John Wayne was killed.

In an interview, I think it was with Johnny Carson or maybe David Letterman, Dern told about receiving death threats and how hard it was for him to get any kind of acting role after that movie {Cowboys}.
