Im about 99% on booking a leopard for 2027 with D&Y in the Omay. I feel its a solid choice. But never hunted leopard before. I have seen many hunt reports. Anyone thats had this experience i would appreciate any info. You can post on thread a pm. Thank you for taking time to respond.

I was on the same hunt you are going on with D&Y in the same area with @Philip Glass . He had set up pre baiting and took a hippo for more bait during his hunt. He told me he was gambling by trying a leopard for a 10 day hunt with us, his friends versus a typical 14 day hunt. Not to worry…I think he took a beautiful leopard with York on our 7th day of the 10 day hunt.

If all you are looking at is leopard success rates I’m sure they can answer that. Have you hunted concession areas before? What else do you expect from the hunt? I’d confirm the year they hold the concession through on current contract to avoid any surprises anywhere you book.

Thanks @Rare Breed! I would do 14 day as thats what they have available for me. Definitely do pre baiting as well. I did read hunt report but don’t remember what time of year were you there?

@375Fox the success seems good from what I'm hearing. But kinda why I'm asking for info seen hunt reports and have emailed Dalton who has answered any questions I've had…. I don’t know much about leopard hunting other than videos i just know it’s at the top of my list And ready to go after it.

@Philip Glass don't know one another but respect a lot of your opinions on here. Good quality cats?

Thanks all.

I haven’t hunted with D&Y, and haven’t hunted the Omay BUT I have talked a good bit with them, and unsuccessfully hunted Leopard elsewhere. My PH for part of my hunt apprenticed together with York at HHK and works D&Y them on occasion when they need another PH. He spoke very highly of York and the Omay area.

I’d ask about best time of the year to hunt leopard, number of permits for their concession, how long they have the concession, if you’re hunting the north or the south, pre-baiting, preferred baits and how many they like to run, who will be your PH on the hunt, how many leopards do they take per year in that concession? will you be their first Leopard Hunter of the year there? The last? Or somewhere in the middle? How long is the hunt? Do you have the option to do longer or extend if you need more time? What else is on quota? Will there be others in camp or their other camps?

@Mtn_Infantry Asked most but definitely a few I didn’t think of….any info and thoughts help!
Thank you!

August was when he took the leopard

I had taken a couple of Tom’s in the Lowveld but saw the biggest tracks of my life in D&Y safaris area when it was Bulembi Safaris. These guys seem like a great outfit. I would do it! The wilderness makes the hunt. Good luck.

I second the lowveld for biggest cats . However big open concessions are nice .
Being the first leopard safari of the year in the area can be helpful . But my biggest tip for leopard is to hunt the dark side of the moon. The first thing I do when leopard is on the list is get out the moon calendar a check with the outfitter for availability.
Booking for 2027 now should give you a wide open schedule of dates available.

@Rockwall205 thank you!!
Big whitetail hunter i use the moon phase for that. Cant believe i didn’t think of it. You just helped me pick the week. May1-15 only one available with the new moon phase. Being told by outfit these are prime dates. Baits last longer, thick veg cats walk the roads and rivers beds more so.

Im going with trust the outfitter on this but
Any one have more insight on that time of year.
Thanks!

If you will pay for prebaiting, book a 14 day safari, have the ability to sit quiet for hours in a blind, and hunt dark of the moon you will almost certainly kill a nice cat with D&Y. Actually I am surprised they have an opening for 2027. Jump on it!
They have one client that has taken something like 8 cats and almost always in the first 3 days! I am not that lucky. I was able to take a cat on a 10 day safari recently Hunting with York. It was quiet for the first part of the hunt but by the time we got my cat in bait there were several others.
Do not worry about the size of the cat. These days, with so many failures, you just want to connect on a nice mature Tom.

Leopard hunting is the ultimate chess match. Book for the dark phase of the moon and bring your patience. I took my leopard in namibia. I have spoke with Dalton and York and CMS and would hunt with either company in a heart beat if I was hunting Zimbabwe.

@Philip Glass thank you! Nice cat! 300 win? Swift ammo im sure but what bullet? Did you need a thermal clip on? Planning on taking r8 in 300 win with a z8 and same setup in 375…. Two complete guns so i don’t have to switch back and forth. They had one tag open up due to health issues other than that it’s fully booked. I will do the suggested 2-3 days of pre-bait. Would do more but he doesn’t think its necessary. I just sent an email to Dalton saying book it!

@AZDAVE Thank you! I agree with those two seem solid. Both very responsive and provided a ton of info. If i could i would hunt with both of them.

@Philip Glass that a camera they use on each bait or something you brought with you? Thats definitely a cool video to have along with the trophy

I think if you will poke around a bit, Nick Nolte almost certainly best regarded leopard specialist on the continent. https://nicknoltehunting.com/ He doesn't advertise much because he doesn't need to and is fully booked every year. A number of notables have hunted with him, and his success rate is in the 90th percentile. He hunts central Namibia which is an area swarming with cats. He and Isabel are also truly delightful people with a lovely lodge in the Erongo Mountains.

@Red Leg thank you!! I respect your opinions and always appreciate your knowledge on what you share… Thank you!

Definitely in Namibia, but I think the continent might be a stretch. Zambezi valley areas, Niassa, Southern Tanzania all have extremely high success rates on cats. A Namibian leopard might be much larger on average, but also much more educated by farmers and a lot more likely to be taken a night as opposed to daylight hours. I think it’s difficult to compare a Namibian Leopard hunt to Zimbabwe. They are two very different hunts.

300 win mag 180 TTSX bullets. Not TSX, but TTSX or Nosler Accubonds or Swift AFrames 180 grain he will be a dead tom. Dark side of the moon. Bring your favorite book/magazine. Just my opinion use a illuminated reticle if you can and equally as important and maybe more important than anything is having a rock solid steady rest. Don't try to shot off hand leaning on your blind or anything like that. Bring a solid rifle rest for both ends of your rifle.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
