Okay, I have a question about flying through SA with firearms to Namibia. I have made this journey 3 times. Twice with firearms, once without. I have 3 very different experiences. The first trip was with my son. Due to only a 90 minute layover in Dulles, our luggage and rifle case were left behind due to weight restrictions. That was a recurring theme I understand for SAA that summer. Note to self - next time have longer layovers so your baggage is in the pile to board sooner. When we got to SA, we had nothing but our carry on's. Next day, onto Namibia, still with nothing (I left the key to the gun case locks with the lost baggage people so they could clear them through SAPS if/when they came through). Three days later. a guy in a little pick-up, with a little trailer, rolls into our camp in the middle of Namibia with all of our gear! I am still amazed that it followed and found us. Trip 2 was with my daughter, and everything as far as baggage went very smooth. First day of hunting our vehicle hit a very large wart hog hole and the jar of the impact broke the stock on my rifle. I had insurance on the guns through SCI and it was a very simple claims process when we returned home and they were very nice to work with. I highly recommend their, or similar, insurance. Trip 3 was with my wife, and this will finally bring me to my question. We did not take firearms this time as we spent a week in Cape Town and then went up to Namibia for a couple weeks to hunt and look around. So my question is - I want to go back WITH firearms and spend about 5-7 days in SA before going up to Namibia. Has anyone done this? Can I do a SAPS permit and make arrangements to leave the weapons with the guest house that I usually spend the one night at, but of course it would be longer? I see threads on here of people wanting to do the same in London, Frankfurt, etc. I have to tell you all, while you are down there, spend some time and drive around SA, it is an amazing country!
