Our Hunting Travel Specialist on AH

NEW AGENT INTRO: I'm proud to introduce my daughter-in-law and travel agent, Jennifer Ginn, who has been working with me for the past two years. She's doing a great job taking some of the load off of my shoulders. Not any photos of her in Africa yet . . . but tentative plans for her first trip with us in 2015! Now you can put a face to the voice and emails if you've spoken to her or worked with her on your booking. She's also worked the SCI Convention booth with me for three years now. Thanks for your hard work, Jennifer - welcome aboard!

Okay, I have a question about flying through SA with firearms to Namibia. I have made this journey 3 times. Twice with firearms, once without. I have 3 very different experiences. The first trip was with my son. Due to only a 90 minute layover in Dulles, our luggage and rifle case were left behind due to weight restrictions. That was a recurring theme I understand for SAA that summer. Note to self - next time have longer layovers so your baggage is in the pile to board sooner. When we got to SA, we had nothing but our carry on's. Next day, onto Namibia, still with nothing (I left the key to the gun case locks with the lost baggage people so they could clear them through SAPS if/when they came through). Three days later. a guy in a little pick-up, with a little trailer, rolls into our camp in the middle of Namibia with all of our gear! I am still amazed that it followed and found us. Trip 2 was with my daughter, and everything as far as baggage went very smooth. First day of hunting our vehicle hit a very large wart hog hole and the jar of the impact broke the stock on my rifle. I had insurance on the guns through SCI and it was a very simple claims process when we returned home and they were very nice to work with. I highly recommend their, or similar, insurance. Trip 3 was with my wife, and this will finally bring me to my question. We did not take firearms this time as we spent a week in Cape Town and then went up to Namibia for a couple weeks to hunt and look around. So my question is - I want to go back WITH firearms and spend about 5-7 days in SA before going up to Namibia. Has anyone done this? Can I do a SAPS permit and make arrangements to leave the weapons with the guest house that I usually spend the one night at, but of course it would be longer? I see threads on here of people wanting to do the same in London, Frankfurt, etc. I have to tell you all, while you are down there, spend some time and drive around SA, it is an amazing country!

I believe the answer to your question is yes. The details maybe not quite as you hope with leaving the rifle at the guest house, but with someone licensed to hold the rifles. I would give Henry at riflepermits.com a call or an email. He will know the answer.

Actually quite certain you can, go here: http://riflepermits.com/other-services/ and see the storage facilities part.

Thank you Phil, I will look into it and try to remember to post what I find out.

Yes, I have left my rifle in RSA and left the country. You just cannot leave it there. Africa Sky held mine for me. Was a bit pricey for two weeks. I believe that @riflepermits.com will also hold it for you.

Okay, here is what I put to Henry at RiflePermits.com -

I have a question about the procedures and costs to have a couple of rifles stored for about 5-7 days there is SA.
My wife will be with me and we would like some time in SA before going up to Namibia in 2019.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

His reply was -

The rifle storage fee will be $400, the rifles must be stored with an accredited firearms dealer who has the necessary storage and transport permits, that is why it is expensive, but we can assist you.

Kind regards
Henry Durrheim Director www.riflepermits.com

I found my cost of overnighting in JNB at Africa Sky and storage for 2 weeks, from 2 years ago. I could have bought a gun for what it cost me - $704.97 USD.

Hi Arctic97 - looks like you have found your answer about leaving rifles in RSA. Hope you have a smoother trip this next time ;)

I’ve been working with Jennifer at the agency and she has been very very helpful with my planning!

Jenifer or Lori have always done a great job for me to. Have used them to book airfare on all 5 of my trips.

$400 seems like a rip off just to store your guns for a week! I think they know they have you over a barrel!

I saw a thread a while ago about traveling through Frankfurt with firearms but I can’t find it anymore. 2 years ago I flew through Frankfurt to rsa and I had a 16 hour layover. I just went through customs with my carryone to check into a hotel for some sleep. 3 hours before takeoff, I came back through and got on my flight.
Did I just get lucky? I seem to recall in the other thread there were changes coming to Frankfurt’s policy on checked firearms, is this true?

Last year my wife, Cynthia, and I flew to JNB, cleared my rifles and flew on to Port Elizabeth. Pierre Moolman, PH and owner Sun Africa Safaris out of Pearston, East Cape, picked us up at the airport and guided us on a 7 day hunt for the third year a row. After the hunt, Pierre Moolman, his lovely wife, Annalie, Cynthia and I we flew from Port Elizabeth to JNB and stayed at Africa Sky for one night. The next day, we left my rifles and our hunting clothes in locked storage at Africa Sky and went on a 7 day tour guided by the Moolmans with lots of time in Kruger. We returned to Africa Sky for one night, picked up my rifles, all luggage and were delivered to the airport. We paid for the lodging and meals only. If you transit JNB and don't stay at Africa Sky, you are missing out on a pleasurable experience. Ed

Afton house will also store you rifles and deliver them to the airport for you on your way back.

My Wife and I are planning our fourth trip to Africa, the first three with Pierre Moolman JR of Sun Africa Safaris (WhatsApp: +27 72 8314 151, www.sun-africa.com, info@sun-africa.co.za) for a hunt in the Great Karoo in East Cape, South Africa for an extensive variety of plains game and a tour from Cape Town to Kruger with Pierre Moolman SR and his lovely wife Annalie. On each of these trips, the hunting was great and the touring was wonderful. This year, we wanted a wilder experience so we booked a Cape Buffalo hunt in Zimbabwe for mid-May, once again with our friends from Sun Africa Safaris. We were more than a little concerned with the ever more tenuous financial situation with South African Air so we checked the posts on this forum and contacted Lori Spears, aka Safari Gal, from @Travel Express (+1 (406) 363-0883 - +1 (800) 808-4868, travelexpress@montana.com, www.TravelExpressAgency.com.) Lori has become more and more popular with all travelers to Africa, especially hunters and has brought her daughter-in-law, Jennifer, on board to provide more of the excellent service that has been her trademark. Good move Lori!! Jenifer was understanding of our concerns, patient, and above all, professional. She made excellent recommendations, provided lots of information important to us and booked our flights, all at a reasonable price. We will definitely be using Jennifer again and highly recommend her to first-timers and seasoned travelers alike.

My wife accompanies me on these hunts but does not hunt, her passion is touring and we were blessed to contact Matthys van Aswegen (+27 214223498, matthys@discoverafrica.com, www.discoverafrica.com) who has arranged exceptional lodging, dining and adventure packed excursions in and around Victoria Falls and Chobe. We anticipate a wonderful time and will keep you posted.

I got Lori's information from SSI for my first safari and have dealt with her for all three of my hunts. ONLY WAY TO GO. She got me the best flights and prices and had ready answers for all my questions. Last year I was planning on taking my daughter and son in law with me but my grandson became ill and they had to cancel out. A phone call to Lori and their travel problems were solved. She worked with them even though I had made their reservations and guided them through the refund process and dealing with the travel insurance company.
For fast, efficient, personal service Travel Express and Lori are the only ones I trust my travel plans to.

Thanks Ed Lally & Newboomer - we really appreciate the kind words and referrals. We strive to keep our personalized service a top priority

Yep, while I don't have a ton of experience under my belt, they have been great to work with on my first trip and my second (scheduled) trip.

First trip was great communication and easy travels. Flights and seat preferences were booked as requested. I was a bit disappointed when I got my itinerary and there were 4-5 hour layovers on each leg. I should have been thankful as I checked my bag from PDX straight through to WDH and everything arrived as scheduled. I spoke with my outfitter about it and they told me that if I had shorter layovers my bags might not have arrived with me. Humble pie was consumed.

For the upcoming trip, I reached out to Lori around December. She got me a quote fairly quickly, but due to budget I asked to hold off a bit. She kept my trip open and sent me an alert that the pricing had dropped. I appreciate that she kept looking for me and sent me that message.

They will have my business going forward.

Here is a great travel tip!

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is a great way to speed up entry into the United States, for US and Canadian citizens. After downloading the free app, users can submit their details upon arrival, and bypass the regular line to enter. MPC is available at 46 sites currently. Check out the CBP website for full details!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.
