Overnight Johannesburg Recommendation

Looking at the map of the airport area, I see Protea by Marriott. No one has mentioned this hotel which appears to be very close to the airport. Is it good, bad, or indifferent?

I have points with Marriott which might be able to be used is why I'm asking.

City Lodge for absolute convenience. I arrived around 6pm and had a 9am flight the next morning to Windhoek so with gun clearing and collecting luggage as well as checking in the next morning, made for a short stay.

Wish I was at City Lodge right now. I'd go downstairs and order a gin & tonic and enjoy the buffet and look forward to the breakfast in the morning and PH picking me up for 7 days of hunting. Nobody should upset to be in that spot.....

(1) you must be in-transit to use this hotel as it’s behind the secured area
(2) it’s currently closed for remodeling.

this has been a feature on here many times. i far prefer to be picked up by the PH or subcontracted driver ASAP-NO layover. this only happened to me once in Namibia. place was nice, but it was a waste of time and money when i'd rather be hunting (and quite frankly didn't like my guns in a hotel safe!!!)

Well, that answers that. There is another Protea on the other side of the highway. Do you know if is also in-transit?

That’s open for anyone, don’t know about that locations firearms policy and safety

book far in advance. demand that you hunt straight away! ;) flights don't line up? pick other dates. it's do-able. now, if you're going to an oceanfront winery et. al. to relax and hook great whites after your hunt-fine! lol It's akin to living in Maine, flying through NYC or Newark (having to stay there????!!!!) and then press on to your favorite western state. NFW! my $200 (eq. 2 cents under Trump.) Let the consumer drive the industry, not the other 'way round!

Thanks all

But like I posted earlier. All worked out.
PH actually made some room for us to depart two days ahead of planned time frame for a hippo hunt I decided to add on.

Just back 2 weeks ago from my first trip to RSA. My PH had recommended 2 hotels for my overnight stay. I chose City Lodge. Marius from Rifle Permits escorted me from police check in to the front desk of the City Lodge. Once I was engaged in the check in process he bid me farewell and have a great hunt. A porter placed my bag and rifle case on the dolly and off we went to my room on the third floor. A nice clean room, actually better than some I have stayed in while traveling in the states. There I was, rucksack, baggage and rifle case. Relaxing until my PH picked me up the next morning. I thought it was nice having my rifle and all my gear in my room. No different than traveling in most states back home. A very smooth transition from airport, rifle check in process, check in hotel. Hats off to Jennifer at Travel Express, Henry at Rifle permits, and my PH at Kwalata Safaris for their help in making a first trip very easy. Oh, booked the room thru Expedia, actually less than some dives I had to stay in while traveling at home.

Thanks all

Well I need to ref-raze my comment.
PH will be picking me up that evening upon arrival on DL200. We are staying over night in Johannesburg that night. PH is arranging where we are staying and such. Then depart the next morning for Limpopo to hunt.

A great plan Mark. Time in the bush trumps time in Jo’Burg!!!

Contact Elize at Afton House. I’ve stayed there multiple times with nothing but great experiences.

You're welcome to contact us too. No need to stay in the city!

I’ve only stayed at Afton House. Original owners passed on & it was sold but nothing negative to say. Was in the summer. Great place

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
