Politics

The decision by Truman to drop the bombs to help force a surrender was a big factor. It is also claimed that the decision by Russia to enter the fray from the west also persuaded the stubborn Japanese leaders to surrender.
The Japanese realized they were going to get pounded on 2 fronts.

With escalating world tensions, I wonder what maniacal leader will someday put his finger on the launch buttons.?

The U.S.A is led by a man who probably can't remember what day it is when he wakes up in the morning and he has the nuclear football
As I understand it, soviet troops massing in Yuzhno was part of the calculus WE used to decide to drop the bombs. The writing was already on the wall for Stalin's plans for eastern and central Europe. Keeping them off Japanese soil was of no small import.

I am really surprised why this is an issue for people. It is a recommendation not an edict. Do you think people pay attention to the current recommendation of two-drink maximum per day?

If it wasn't for politics no one would care or purposely misconstrue it.

I care more about the declaration of National monuments everywhere that limits our energy production, but the stupid beer comment gets more reactions among the masses.

Tell that to that folks who want a BIG GULP in NYC.

Nuclear tipped cruise missile's?
They were, and they also carried conventional war heads, but unfortunately during the INF Treaty, those missiles were destroyed.

If you recall Bernard Shaw reporting about the Iraqi war, and a missile flew behind him. That is what GLCM was designed to do. I believe those missiles were launched from a ship, and not from the ground since most if not all of the GLCM bases were shut down.

That was not an edict, but a regulation passed by NYC health department A corresponding action would be the Congress voting for a similar law for the USA.

Also, if you are going to poke at stupid local laws there is plenty to poke at the dry counties in the South or the blue laws where some of the aisles in grocery stores are blocked on Sundays. I was really surprised in Dallas when one side of the street was dry and the other side was wet. Of course, they also had a "club membership" loophole on the dry side where one bought a membership that applied towards the first drink. :ROFLMAO:

Again, it is just a recommendation. Impossible to enforce as evidenced by what happened during the prohibition. Best they can do is to increase the excise taxes in order to modify people's behavior. That still requires Congressional approval, I think.

Actually, we were lobbying pretty hard for the USSR to enter the war against Japan for most of '44. Roosevelt was still begging Stalin to do so at Yalta in February of '45. It wasn't until we knew the bomb would work, that their interest in Korea, Manchuria, and the northern Japanese islands became a concern. They declared war on August 7th, one day after the Hiroshima attack (truly was coincidental). and crushed the Japanese army in northern China.

Velly intelesting......

Another comprehensive weekly update from Strieff at RedState as he continues his informed upstream swim against the neo-isolationists on the far right. Those that believe we should support Russia by not aiding Ukraine probably shouldn't clutter their minds with these weekly reviews.

I especially enjoyed this eloquent and illustrative quote. A particularly endearing quality is its near universal application among hand ringers.

"The bottom line is that the Ukrainian drone attacks on targets in Russian cities show that Jake Sullivan getting the Hershey squirts at the thought of escalation is more of a reflection of his lack of guts than Russian intentions or capabilities."

“As the detonation sucked the air out of the aircraft’s cabin, I would wager that the last thought in the doomed dome of [Yevgeny] Prigozhin’s skull was ‘Putin!’, preceded by one of the many profanities in which the former jailbird and hotdog salesman was so fluent.”

—Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wagering in a Daily Mail op-ed last week that the doomed boss of Russia’s Wagner Group went down cursing Putin.

I would agree with Boris. Looks like the BBC's analysis puts the video the weekend before he returned.

I continue to be interested in the fact that no one other than the Russians, which no one around here is likely to believe, (ordinarily!), is the only source that states that Prigozhin IS dead and buried.
Every other source always says things like most certainly dead or probably dead, likely dead, etc etc.

I suspect this is because unlike some, they dont necessarily believe it, that it may be possible, he is alive and kicking. Some folks keep an open mind on things that are hard to prove,,,,

I know the rascally Rooskies claim to have buried him but anyone get a look in the box to see what or who is in it? :sneaky:

The plane was a Brazilian Embraer. One of the post in the Redstate article posted by @Red Leg stated that when there's a plane crash, the manufacturers and government officials from that country always participate in the investigation. The Russians are not allowing the Brazilians to partake in the investigation. Must be trying to hide something, like bomb or missile markings. So much for that BRIC solidarity.

Well there is also the fact that the Russians control ALL of the evidence, so the only conclusion anyone else can come to is an interpretation of what the Russians are willing to tell them.

Has anyone found out why Prigozhin was even in Russia? After all wasn’t he exiled to Belarus.

I know I must be missing something because no one is asking this question and I haven’t heard any reasons given any where. I have only seen one article and it just says the same question.

I recall the news of USSR setting off a 50 Meg H bomb & having plans for one double the size. I was in the 8th grade at the time. the teacher said that the bombs being made by the US were smaller but had no disadvantage to the bigger bombs because any of them would blow large city completely off of the map. this was after the Gary Powers U2 problem and before the Cuban crisis. We figured it was just a matter of time before Dr.Strangelove would press the button and kill us all, but here we are over 60 years later- maybe all that fretting wasn't for nothing- maybe that was what prevented the nuclear war.
That was and has been the core of the MAD Doctrine since the USSR got the bomb. But it also requires you don’t blink. Gives me no reassurance with our current admin. Conversely, our POSPOTUS has been video recorded not blinking for over 40 seconds- a sign of some serious neurological condition.

And yep, I always flash to the Dr Strangelove scene of Slim Pickens riding a big kahoona out the bombay doors

“has been video recorded not blinking for over 40 seconds”. Amazing what a stiff dose of lithium can do. LOL

The concept of Prigozhin being "exiled to Belarus" is a construct of the media. Nobody has seen the actual agreement forged between Lukashenko, Putin and Prigozhin. Furthermore, considering the people involved, the agreement wouldn't be worth anything anyway. Prigozhin has reportedly been freely moving in and out of Russia ever since the 'uprising', apparently without any obstruction - until there was.

Is he actually dead? We'll never know, it's Russia after all. There is no verifiable point of truth. My view is probably best sized up by the line from one of the Marvel movies:
"Well, he's been dead before. But this time... I think it really might be true."
It's a best guess, not an absolute.
