I watched this interview of Thune with Bret Baier last night and it is worth reading over on the Fox site. It is particularly worth parsing what he is actually saying among the assurances of support for the president, his agenda, etc.

A couple of comments are provided below:

"All these people have a process that they have to go through. All these nominees are – it's a – you know, advice and consent. That's the Senate's constitutional role when it comes to confirmation of nominations to the executive branch of the government. And we take that role seriously,"

He was also asked about recess appointments which many on the web have offered as way to appoint Gaetz without a vote.

"Well, it's an option, but obviously, it takes, you know, you have to have all Republicans vote to recess as well. So the same Republicans that you mentioned that might have a problem voting for somebody under regular order probably also have a problem voting to put the Senate into recess,"

He then affirmed that "........ these nominees deserve their day in court. They deserve a hearing, a confirmation hearing, an opportunity to be vetted. And the Senate will perform its constitutional role under advice and consent. But we are not going to allow the Democrats to thwart the will of the American people in giving President Trump the people that he wants in those positions to implement his agenda,"

However, he then concluded. "But obviously, there is a process whereby we get down and scrub all these nominees and figure out whether or not, one, they're qualified and are they people who are fit to hold these offices."

I do not see how Gaetz survives an actual hearing - particularly when democrats start reading to the American people the republican chaired findings of the republican led House Ethics Committee. It was due to be voted on with regard to its release this week (today actually) until Gaetz suddenly resigned. One would have to assume the votes were there to release it. They will paint him as the worst pedophile, sex trafficker, and drug addict since Osiel Cardenas Guillen.

The democrats will attempt to portray Gabbard as, at best, a Russian stooge. She has strongly, if perhaps unintentionally, publicly supported the Russian propaganda narrative with regard to the Ukraine war echoing a lot of the false statistics promulgated by Scott Ritter (now primarily living in Russia) and COL(R) Douglas Macgregor. Still. assuming there is no actual there there, she probably gets confirmed.

RFK jr will be a lightning rod for the "anti-science" narrative of the democrat party. That said, I suspect he will be effective as a witness, and barring something crazy in the hearing, can likely get fifty votes (all that is needed because Vance breaks any tie).

Assuming the Gaetz's hearing, if it ever takes place, will be a dumpster fire, Hegseth's hearing will be the most critical to a nominee. There is very little public record on him. Of the 150 mil people who voted this year and 75 million or so who supported Trump, perhaps a 1.5 million watch Fox. The democrats and press will portray him as unprepared/qualified for this appointment - not a difficult assignment. He has the opportunity to surprise those who do not know of him with his intellect and preparation for the hearing. We'll see. As of now, I would give him a fifty-fifty shot. That could swing significantly either way based upon his individual meetings with senators and the hearing.

20 republican senators will be up for election in 2026 and only 13 democrats. Depending on which state, several of those republicans will be working the calculus of whether it is better to be perceived as loyally supporting Trump or protecting the country, and even the president, from his worst instincts.

It should be a must watch TV spring.

I watched the Thune interview. I got the impression he did not think Gaetz will get through the process. He also tipped his hand that the same republicans that will not confirm Gaetz will also not allow a recess. So then no recess appointments can occur

Thune also said that he thought the Gaetz charges will be made public. Even though they can’t charge him anymore. They will be leaked

Many of us want the DOJ status quo
disrupted. But we also need to get some legislation through. Gaetz will only slow or halt that progress.

If Thune shows that he is establishment business as usual, the conservative wolves will be howling at his door.

The majority did not vote for D.C swamp business as usual

Gaetz - The DOJ dopped the case, that just leaves the house report. Of course the house report will be bad, will it be believable considering the DOJ dropped their case? Of course not, but the D's will run with it, MSM will run with it and it might kill his chance. However, he has a second chance with an appointment to the Senate. That would really mind screw the D's.

RFK, Jr - he gets through without much problem. After all his father was part of Camelot and the apple does not fall from from the tree.

My wife has suffered from constant digestive issues here in the States for decades; but we can spend two weeks gorging ourselves in Italy, France, Ireland, or Scotland without so much as a hint of trouble. It's the only time I can do that and still come back five pounds lighter.

I noticed the same thing with my trips to Australia; first couple of days can be rough with the time change and gastrointestinal issues from change of diet, but after that it's a MUCH better standard of living and quality of life.

After the first few days I can tell the difference in bathroom routine, sleep and generally just feeling better, and this isn't a placebo effect; upon returning to the USA I spend DAYS in agony with my stomach churning.

Several things are blatantly different in the USA......

Coffee - EVERY servo(gas station) even in the hinterlands of Australia can make a cup of coffee that will hands down beat the swill that we are fed by blue haired baristas in the USA.

Bacon - Australian bacon is superior in every way, seriously we've been cheated and lied to for generations and from a national pride standpoint it's a disgrace; Make Bacon Great Again!

Candy and Drinks - When I'm out of the USA I notice that my cravings for sugar all but disappear; however when I do buy chewing gum or the odd candy, I notice that Australian candy is free from dyes and largely free from artificial flavors.

Portions vs. Quality - Yes the portions are smaller, however the quality is night and day superior and I actually feel as though Australians get what they pay for and we as Americans simply get the lowest quality that we're willing to accept.

I've been to Australia twice and spent a total of 3 months there and while talking to Australian's and upon them learning that I'm American, I've had no less than 6 people ask me.....

"Is it true that Wal-Mart has electric scooters for people that are too fat to walk?"

Canola oil - Before the refinement process was invented to take the bad taste and toxins out of canola oil, it's primary use was for machinery lubricant.

Hopefully Robert Kennedy can make some meaningful changes to our food supply.

Deep state hack John Cornyn will be behind the sabotage of Trumps AG pick
It will definitely be interesting to see how GOP senators that voted for Merrit Garland vote on Gaetz, if he makes it to a vote at all.

I think Gaetz is just a “Cathodic Anode” to take the focus and attention for a while. I think the eventual AG is the announced assist AG Todd Blanche. Who will also clean up the DOJ.
Trump has announced he has no intention on chasing down political opponents and using the DOJ as Obama and Biden have.

I'll bet you a nice dinner that Gaetz's nom never makes it to a vote. The senate will love to find an issue where they can say we are with you Mr President, but .............. Gaetz will provide an irresistible and totally justifiable opportunity.

@Wheels did you take up Red Leg in this? Sounds like a great deal.
Best case scenario, we get destructive progress at DoJ.
Worst case scenario, you get dinner with Red Leg.
Can’t go wrong! Some guys have all the luck…

Yeah, the US isn't great in this respect.

I work for a food (beverage) producing company with business units on basically every continent. I am intimately familiar with the EU food regs, the Canadian food regs, and the FDA requirements in the US.

Suffice to say, if we want to move a product from our EU business (or Canada) to the US, I have no concerns with the formulation meeting FDA standards and my focus is on cost optimisation. The only exception that springs to mind is gluten free claims.

By contrast, moving a US product to Europe is a 100% guaranteed reformulation... you do the math on that one.
