I remember in the early 70s in school being taught that the earth was cooling and this was due to all the pollution being introduced into the air. This was blocking the sunlight causing global cooling. In the early 80s we were told that chlorine was causing the earth to lose ozone and increasing the likelihood of skin cancer. When mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991 it was estimated that more chlorine entered the atmosphere in one week than the world could produce in a thousand years. Global warming was the rage in the late 90s, this phrase is not used anymore since it has not gotten noticeably warmer in the last 20 years. Now it’s called climate change, if it gets warmer or colder, if we have more or less hurricanes if rains too much or there is a drought it’s climate change. The solution is alway for the government to take more of your money, have more control over your life, punish industry and redistribute wealth. The Paris climate accord was simply a redistribution of wealth. If you truly believe that fossil fuels are ending human civilization then lead by example, do not drive, do not fly, don’t heat or air condition your home. I think I will go light a cigar. You're right, the earth has been spinning for a long time and will keep going after it's spat us out. But that's not what were talking about here. Nor are we talking about today's climate versus any time hundreds of millions of years ago.
Climate change is about what's happening now. And rapidly. The rate of change now is extraordinary. It's deeply concerning in terms of temperature and weather effects upon the people, animals and plants that inhabit the planet now.
'However, there is nothing as efficient as the modern combustion engine and likely never will be.' Eek! Um, there's so many things I could say, but I'll settle on 'Really?' :-D I suggest you write a book with that as the title and make a lot of money, from folk who are fascinated by combustion engines (including me) and from technologists who will want to find out what substances this scientist has been using.
As primary school kids we watched a cartoon about a detective called Dick Tracey. His team used wrist watches with little TV screens to talk to each other. We loved this but none of us ever thought it would happen. In the year 2003 I was at a conference where a renowned futurologist discussed the consensus view amongst his peers. One was, in 2035 we will start to see people receiving computer chips installed in their brains. Wrong by 10 years.
