And to me assimilation means the adoption of a new culture and leaving yours behind, while a melting pot is where everyone keeps their culture and beliefs, but they all mange to live together.

Yeah but as has been shown certain sections of people/religions don't want to do the living together part.....

One thing I am puzzled about. If the intend is to cut defense budget by 8% each year then why did the recently passed CR increased it by $6B?

Seems to be a disconnect somewhere.
Hegseth said on one of the Sunday talk shows the 8% was a realignment in DOD spending - not a budget reduction. Not his exact words, but something along those lines.

You’re right. The Jews did a horrible job of assimilating into the Middle East when they were relocated there after a thousand year absence.

From my experience, second gen immigrants tend to live fairly “white” lives.

The truth is neither happens. Local cultures adopt some of the elements of immigrant cultures and immigrants adopt many of the local customs. That’s why we have Tex-mex food and Italian restaurants.

Exactly!

I saw him interviewed in the last couple of weeks, can't remember where, and he indicated the "reductions" were mostly to come from cutting waste. After 7 straight failed audits, they are estimating the DOD could be cut as much as 15% from a serious DOGE effort. That certainly sounds plausible since the DOD seems to be a large money pit with no accountability.

Would really like to hear opinions from on the ground South Africans

It was meant to be hyperbole. What does assimilation look like? Speaking English? Being Christian? You guys can’t even agree on a single denomination. Eating American food? Corn dogs and deep fried Oreos for all, no pizza, French fries, hamburgers, and sorry Chicago, no more polish sausage.

And since you’re all not Puritans, it’s safe to say that assimilation hasn’t been the name of the game since the 16th century.

America has always been a melting pot since the beginning
You are Canadian, correct? I guess I wasn’t aware that Canadians all speak one language, all go to the same church and all eat the same food? Lol.

In the USA, all learning English would be a nice start. As @Red Leg noted, the melting pot isn’t melting to well in Dearborn, MI or in Vancouver, BC in Canada either.

How well did North Americans assimilate with the natives of the time?
Loads better than the Comanche assimilated with their neighbors for thousands of years before Europeans arrived!

There is a reason why the Comanche have no reservations/land of their own .... other tribes dismantled what little land they had decades ago.

The same reason that every North American tribe that encountered European/USA forces joined forces with them to fight the Comanche; because the Comanche were the ISIS of central/south plains and if you lived within 300 miles of them you were in danger.

The Comanche were the first tribe to capture horses from the Spanish that landed in South Texas and they fully exploited their new transportation to continue their genocide on other tribes; and you can be certain that if they had horses and steel, the Comanche if left to their own moral standard would have enslaved/obliterated every other tribe in north America.

That has not remotely been the definition in this country.

That classic definition is - "The term "melting pot" refers to a metaphor for the United States as a society where people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and national backgrounds come together and blend into a unified, homogeneous culture."

This metaphor is so universally accepted that it really is not even subject to debate. Both the term and idea gained popularity in the early 20th century, notably as a result of Israel Zangwill’s 1908 play "The Melting Pot," which celebrated the U.S. as a place where different peoples could merge into a new, shared identity.

Sounds to me your version of assimilation falls right in line with what Canada did with the residential schools for native people; where the children of natives were forced to attend these boarding schools which are the sights of mass graves of the children that were often abused and neglected in these schools until they were closed in 1996.

Being forcibly removed from your parents, beaten for speaking your native tongue, forced to eat European food and then having your body discarded in an unmarked mass grave to hide abuses of the government..... Sounds more like Stalin's "political reeducation" to me.

Everyone should be forced to read T. R. Fehrenbach's "Commanche; The History of a People," before becoming too enamored with the presumed nobility of the indigenous North Americans.

Yes and the Sioux weren’t too far behind up north.

May want to research that a bit more. 215 bodies yet no excavation so far???

Don't go there.
Same thing happened here in US as well.

"It took ten years for America's politicians to understand this with the election of Trump and 18 years to get where we are now".

Wheels.
Sorry for my late reply.
I can only agree with the way you look at the development.
But in this world without the cooperation of democratic peoples as partners, you will not stand up to China and others.
The gaps that you (the USA) leave behind will be gladly and immediately filled by other powers (the China and Russia wolves are already eating chalk; a metaphor from Grimm's fairy tale, if you want to do something particularly nice for others).
In Germany it is now the case that the Left and the Greens have been voted out; nevertheless, they are still very vehemently involved in decision-making and I wonder what else we have to vote for to finally stop this left-wing fascism.
This will also go on in Germany for another 10-18 years until the direction is finally changed.
I envy the Swiss for their democratic referendums on important issues.
The outlook here is bleak
Take care

I have confidence in Germany and Europe being able to rebound in the intermediate term. Unfortunately things will have to get worse before the people are fed up enough to demand change. In America we tend to not let the pendulum swing as far as many countries.

The real problem going forward for all western societies is the declining birth rate. For birthrate to increase, people will have to loose faith in the social safety nets provided by their governments and feel the only real safety net is the generosity of the nuclear family, as mankind has done through history. This will probably only happen with severe economic pain and is probably a generation away for most of Europe and the west. Recovery from that will be slow.

I seriously doubt Trump is going to start criminally pursuing most of the blanket pardoned people like Hunter and Jill Biden, etc..

BUT..

Things could get pretty spicy if he he so chooses.. particularly if he chose to pursue Fauci or others..

Well said....

Most people do not realize that when the civil war ended 1/3rd of all black slaves that were held in bondage in North America were owned by Native American tribes; of those tribes the Choctaws were the last to free their slaves and only did so after the U.S. government ordered it under the treaty of 1866, and the army was sent to see that it happened.

This is still a contentious issue today, as several black Americans sued an Apache tribe of Arizona to claim tribal benefits. The legal argument made by the Apache goes something like......

"You were our property - not a member of our tribe, we owe you no more than we owe our horses."
