Wondering if anyone else has run into this issue recently. Regarding my recent shipment from Namibia, the US ag department is requiring my capes and hides be sent to an approved taxidermist for additional dipping. State it's due to HMD. HMD is only found in the very north of the country. Never have had to this previously. Just wondering??

I have not but I’ve come to decision the inspectors can make any decision they want. With warthog tusks only I’ve had some shipments be required to go to USDA approved facility after clearing but not others.

On a similar note i spoke with my rep at coppersmith, 2 crates from Argentina that have red stag and blackbuck have to go to straight to usda tannery. That's new to me. Last 5+ crates shipped directly to me then I sent capes out for tanning

Did the person at coppersmith say why? Is there some new rule where all unfinished animal products have to go to USDA tannery?

All she had to say was it will be "stamped" for usda facility so I had to provide that info.

They have become total jerks! Making up any excuse to force you to the additional expense of a USDA taxidermist. Contact your congressman. I do.

Not surprising. It's been a clownfest the last four months in D.C. Yesterday was the capstone of stupidity. Glad my skulls are coming to Canada. Also glad I took my taxidermist's advice and let him mount the skulls on scrap lumber "plaques" so they will come in as "finished taxidermy." Maybe not needed but good to give no excuse to someone looking for one to cause me grief. Anyway, he didn't charge extra for the wood so why not?

Jennifer at Coppersmith relayed she was informed by Ag Dept inspector it was due to HMD. Doesn't make sense to me as there is no HMD in that part of Namibia.

Warthog have to go to a USDA facility no matter what
Skulls and tusks are not supposed to. I have a shipment with warthog tusks in route to my non-USDA taxidermy right now. But some shipments they’ve required go to USDA facility anyway. I generally don’t see the big deal if they require it to go to a USDA facility after inspection. You just call your taxidermist and have it sent to their tannery first.

He did say capes, but it does seem to be a crap shoot. Some inspectors even try to make finished taxidermy go to USDA. They tried on a shipment of finished bushpig go in 2021 of mine but Coppersmiths in Atlanta got it straightened out.

That’s my understanding too. Warthog, bushpig, ostrich, baboons capes have to go to a USDA facility no matter where they came from. I didn’t catch he had a warthog cape until I reread the thread. I used warthog tusks as an example of inconsistency in my first post.

A lot less inconsistent than the rolling of the dice on who inspects what and where it needs to go!

all pieces and parts of primates, birds, pigs and bovines must be inspected at a usda certified facility. They will be shipped to one of these agents and a usda rep will visit, inspect and if there are no issues, release the shipment.
OP did say they needed to be re dipped which is unusual, maybe just incorrect terminology.
This is true around the world-Mexico, Africa, Sweden or wherever. Primates, pigs, birds and bovines get cleared by a usda agent before they are released to the owner.
The owner can then take them elsewhere for final work to be accomplished.
I would think coppermiths explained that unless there is a problem beyond the standard.
I have heard that finished taxidermy is sometimes questioned if stains or bugs/bug skins etc are present but have never seen it firsthand.
Hope that helps and please feel free to correct/educate me if you get a better answer in your experience.

My last shipment had to go to a USDA taxidermist due to the warthog.

I’d be interested to hear if a warthog cape was ever released directly from customs broker to client without being required to go to a USDA taxidermy or tannery. I previously used Fauna and Flora in New York and now Coppersmiths in Chicago both would have received certain USDA clearances. I’ve had some skulls and tusks go directly to me but capes were always required to go to USDA tannery before my taxidermist.

Sir-
Side question for you. I am going to Argentina next March for a Red Stag/Black Buck hunt. Due to some "law enforcement activity" last year I have been told getting trophies back from Argentina was next to impossible. When are these trophies from and has it been an arduous process?

My question is not about the process of what they have to do once they are here. I already know that. It is about are they even leaving the country of Argentina now. A year or 2 ago there was a law enforcement operation and arrests that involved Argentinian hunting guides not following proper procedures and it has been a nightmare since.

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.

Hello:
I’ll take the .375 Whitworth for $1,150 if the deal falls through.
Thanks .
