Red dot or reflex sight for double rife

I have a Sabatti double rifle in .470 and want to add an red dot or reflex sight to rifle. My eyes are not what the use to be. I hopefully have hunt to Zimbabwe in late September for elephant and buffalo. Who on this forum uses this type of sight and what brand(s) do you recommend?

I do not like fiber optic sights or see through rear sights on a DG rifle they are not rugged enough and get damaged easily...rear sight also confuses they eye too much which takes the focus away from the front sight and aiming point

Well, some well known people use red dots (RMR in this case).

I do have an RMR for my Heym as well, and will put it on after I work up some CEB loads.

One good thing about red dots is that they can be mounted anywhere on the rifle. On this rifle (I realize it is a bolt) I mounted it quite a bit forward as it was too high at the usual scope spot and I would have to lift my head to see the dot.

It still worked very well.

How does moving it forward change the height and not have you lift your head to the same height?

I have a Trijicon RMR on my Searcy. Butch had to mill the rail to fit it. He did this so that the sight would mount right behind the rear open sight. Under recoil the rear sight then acts as a backstop for the RMR.

I like mine and definitely can acquire my aim point much quicker than with open sights.

Take your index finger and look at it with just beyond your nose, then move your hand forward and look at it. Field of view is much wider.

I thought we were referring to the height of the dot above the barrels not field of view....my logic sais if the sight is to high in relation to the bore the this will stay the same anywhere parallel to the bore.

Except your logic does not take into account where the rail is mounted. See the pic, by mounting the rail in front of the action it ended up lowering it enough for me to have the dot in the middle of the Eotech instead of it being up higher. Make sense now?

I use RMRs on my double rifles. The RMRs are compact and quick for me as the sight line is very close to the iron sight line so I can maintain a decent cheek weld. The higher sight live of some other dot and all of the reflex sights I have looked at do not give me a good cheek weld which can make them a bit slower and I perceive more recoil as my cheek seems to get slapped by the rising stock under recoil. With the RMR mount designed to attach on the rib of a double rifle (Two little cuts on the side and a recess on the top of the rib must be made.) they can be taken off quickly to use iron sights or to change RMR sights. I prefer the 3 minute electrically illuminated dot but carry a pre-sighted in tritium/light RMR as a back up as my 74 year old eyes do not get along with iron sights.

Well, you like to parse and nitpick my posts, so I am sure you would have found something else.

My whole point on the original post was that a red dot can be mounted anywhere on the barrel based on personal preference without impacting effectiveness.

You decided to nitpick.

I like your sight set up. The orange glow draws my eye to it without fail.
Mine is quite similar and seems to locate the ideal point of aim by itself.

For long range shooting, I do have a low mounted Talley QD telescopic rig, but prefer the express sights.

I keep coming back to this picture...that thing is bulky and down right ugly....maybe it works very well but man I don't know...it just does not look right
