Hello all!
Wondering if anyone has experience reloading 460 Weatherby, and perticularly what primers work good with that much powder?
I know the Federal 215 is "go-to", but has anyone used Winchester og CCI with good results?
Thanks!

I reload the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum for about 30 years and have shot game with it. I have never used anything other than the primers Federal 215. As far as the powder is concerned, the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum does not have a huge powder capacity. Compared to other cartridges caliber 458, the case of the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum has a normal not too small powder space.

Unfortunately, the same negative things are written for 60 years, but the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum remains one of the best cartridges caliber 458 and over all very easy to reload with powders of different burning rates and surely also with different primers.

I load for the 460. 215s is the go to, so no other results to report.

Not quite sure what @grand veneur was indicating, but yes, the 460 has quite a bit more capacity, and thus capability, than the other 458s. Maybe a miscommunication there.
Thanks, i will stay with the 215 until I run out.
Can't get them in Norway anymore, not sure if we will ever see them again

What's your favorite bullets and powder?

Most has been 4350 for 400gr-550gr. Barnes TSX, Swift AF, and DGS & DGX have all worked well.
I have data for 300gr-600gr...just need to put more time into tinkering with them, but 450 & 500 gr. Are the hunting loads.

I have used also winchester rifle and CCI rifle mag also with good results
i have chronographed echa them againts fed215 tand the velocity diff is only 25-30 fps diff but the SD were impressively 8-10 fps for each so no real diffrence from my end.

And no hang-fire?

I've used CCI 250 exclusively (as I couldn't find any Federal 215) with both my 460 Weatherby and 340 Weatherby with zeros issues working up loads and practicing last summer (100s of rounds), as well as taking bull elephant, rhino, buff, and a good deal of plains game last fall. Going to start on 378 Weatherby shortly.

I’ve shot several hundred Winchester and cci mag primers in the 460.
Like has been said already they worked. I never directly compared velocities but would easily achieve moa 3 shot groups and ~10 fps SD. Although looking at my notes it seems I am about 15 fps slower with a federal large rifle medal match magnum, compared to a Winchester lrm. Too little difference to say for sure.

I’ve fired those primers with a few different powders as low as 15 ish degrees F and not had any issue even with a ball powder. I’ve gotten the impression the federal primer is harder than the cci, looking at how it handles pressure. I may be wrong on that, but the federal gmm certainly doesn’t get flattened out at casual pressures like the Winchester.

A few years ago Handloader Magazine did a test of large rifle primers and found that Winchester large rifle magnum primers were the hottest primers slightly better than the Federal 215.
I use Winchester Magnum primers in my .470ne and all other magnums; I've never had an issue.

A year ago Federal Gold Medal Match 215's were scarce, but now seem common and price had gone down to just over $100 for a brick. Plenty of load data for that case size and primer, so I'll stick with that.

The cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum is a very easy to reload cartridge. The same is not true for other cartridges of this caliber class if you want to reach a good performance with those. One can use for the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum cartridges a big variety of components. There are numerous loading data available, allowing you to make from some reduced to full loads. This is due to the good ratio between caliber and case size/capacity, which is not the case with the majority of the usual cartridges caliber 458 that have a too small capacity case. That is what I wanted to say in post #2.
