I did a search on here and did not find much so sorry if this has been brought up before. My wife just bought me a 2003 Merkel 140AE in 47oNE and I am thinking about (A) changing the iron sights out for a bead front and deep V express rear or (B) putting an RMR reflex sight on it. Has anyone here had their double milled for the RMR type sight and if you did how do you like it? Thanks.

Had Butch Searcy doing the milling for an RMR on my Searcy .470NE. I can see that red dot faster than I can line up the irons without question. At work, but will try to send you pics later as to where it was setup.

Awesome, I would love to see it. Did it extend your range any or tighten your groups?

Without question it tightened my groups. I can shoot open sights okay enough, but I'm so used to an optic of some sorts it works better for me.

The RMRs use a base that you have to order separately. Butch provided me the number of the base and I ordered it before taking the rifle to him. He just milled the center rail a bit right behind the rear sight. That way under recoil, the rear sight acts as a block to the RMR to prevent it from sliding forward. Again however, I'll try to remember pics.

Following....also have a new to me Merkel 140 in 470 NE. Also wanting to put a RMR on it. I was hoping there was a way to mount with out a trip to the smith, but it doesn't sound like it.

I talked to the Gunsmith at Merkel today and they will do the milling, mount it and sight it in for about $300.00. I am waiting on the Mount to com in and everything is getting shipped to them.

Love to see a picture of your rifle. Mine was also built about the same time as yours!

Sorry I am at work and these are the only pics I have right now.

Great pictures sir. And a good deal from Merkel for the install. Red Dots made a big difference for me with my consistency. And with the right mount, be an remove if you want to go back to irons in seconds.

@southern_fowler,

A day or two late, but finally remembered while I was at home to get this done:

Note, I'm going to upload these pics first and post. Once that's done, I will edit the post to add a few notes.

This is a sideview that shows where Butch put mine on. Right behind the rear sight, using it as a backstop.

Opposite side from above, note the screw that is used to attach the sight to the rifle.

Pictures of the rail without the sight on. You see how grooves were milled into it. It's little harder to see the "overbite" if you will that allows the sight base to get in and under the rail.

A pic of the bottom of the sight base. I think from this you can see how the base grabs the milled rail. It's similar to a Weaver style mount.

The Trijicon's have a system of mating their red dots with various base types. You have to obviously get the right base for your application. But you can see where the actual sight mates up to the base, look for the slightly different shade of black at the end of the arrow in the pic.

Which RMR did you go with? I was looking at the Trijicon and wanted to make sure I get the correct mount. Do you have the contact number for the gunsmith handy?

Thanks!

That's right in the ballpark of what Butch charged me and you're getting it done by the factory, should be good!

I got the RMR that on sale right now at Midway USA for $359.00 and the mount is RM58. I found the mount on Amazon for $105.00

@BRICKBURN, please rotate this pic 90 degrees clockwise. This is a sideview that shows where Butch put mine on. Right behind the rear sight, using it as a backstop.

That looks great. I was worried the sight would sit to high, but that doesn't look like it does.
