Animal(s) Hunted: Roe Deer

Here is my trip report to @HUNTROMANIA for Roe deer as the winner of their generous contest (https://www.africahunting.com/threa...-for-2024-in-a-random-drawing-giveaway.74930/) for AH members. I flew from Cincinnati - Toronto- Zurich on Air Canada,
Then on to Cluj Napoca via Swiss Air. I was meeting up with my wife after the hunt to take a cruise out of Barcelona. SO I obviously opted tom rent one of Marius available rifles.

Arrived at CLJ Sunday afternoon and was met there by Marius for the 1 hour drive to our hunting area. He arranged and got me settled into my room, returning a bit later for our evening meal.

Day 1:
Up at 4AM for a 5AM pick up. Off to an area pictured below. We did see one female during our early morning outing. WE were dealing with a full moon phase so that obviously worked against us. WE returned to the truck around 9AM and went for breakfast. I would have a few hours of rest prior to an early dinner and back in the field at 5PM.

Our first morning location.

We went to another area for the evening hunt. Glassing a large hillside field. With an hour of daylight left we moved to another area that we had looked at during our morning drive. As we were walking along the field edge Marius motioned to stop as he glassed the far edge of the field near a small grove of trees. He set up the sticks, got me in position and gave me a yardage reading of 205. Took a deep breath and as it slowly left squeezed the trigger. Marius reported great shot he was down. Posed him for pics and was surprised by their size. They have a vast area to roam so it is NOT a quick walk and shoot. And they are on high alert due to the predators in the area.

My first Roe Deer!!

Day 2:
After a rather cool first morning today was much warmer at the start. Spotted one lone female and a couple of foxes. Spent the rest of the AM hunt moving around glassing different fields and edges. Nothing spotted.

We climbed a steep hill this evening. Marius was kind enough to stop ev3ery 50 yards or so to glass so my old ass could catch up and catch my breath. We were walking up a 2 track through the woods. Up on top we came to a nice open field that led to the road we parked along. We saw nothing during our sit so started down staying along the edges. Halfway down the hill we got busted by one in the woods. I was amazed by the loud barking they make, considering their size.

On a side note here, this was my most memorable part of the trip. We were parked alongside a monastery/convent. Listening to the music up on that hillside in otherwise silent solitude was special.

Thanks. I wanted to do a complete report but am fighting a severe sinus infection from all the travel.
Not to spoil the rest but anyone wanting to hunt roe deer, just go ahead and contact Marius at Hunt Romania. He is a very down to earth consummate professional. I had a great time in a beautiful country.
I cannot thank him enough for an amazing trip. Will try and finish up by Sunday.

Get better, we will all still be here.

I've been looking forward to this report. Get well and then you can finish writing it.

Congratulations on the hunt so far, looking forward to reading the rest!

And thanks to @HUNTROMANIA for organising this raffle!

Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Sounds like you had a great time there. Marius is very accommodating and provides a great hunt. It looks like you used the Blaser?

Day 3:

Since we were dealing with a full moon and overnight storms that lasted until early afternoon we opted to hunt afternoons the last 2 days, I did add one day. ( of course being retired now 4AM really isn't in my DNA anymore!)

It was still raining when Marius picked me up. WE drove to his cabin where he keeps all his items at. Lo and behold out in the field not 100 yards from his cabin is a nice roe deer buck feeding. He asks, of course answer is YES. We move along a fence line to get a proper shooting position. All set up, slowly squeeze,..... he is down. Now that is a serious gift from the hunting gods!

One of Marius' friends was with us and was wanting to shoot a roe deer. I know Marius was in a hard spot, but I told him lets go. You have met the obligation of my winning hunt. I need the practice trying to spot them with one day left. Off we go glassing various fields. in the 4th or 5th field we found a good male. They got out, set up and shot was made, roe deer buck down! At dinner Marius stated once the rain stopped they would be out feeding, and right he was.

Day 4:
KInd of disappointed that today is my last day. Marius picked me up early and I rode around with him as he ran some errands. It allowed me to pick his brain on his red stag hunts. We also discussed various large caliber rifles and their pros and cons. It was a fun afternoon.

So, we stop at location #1, hadn't been here yet. We parked the truck and started along a long open field edge. We did have a slight argument with an electric fence, sorry Marius but I know we both had a good laugh over it. We got to a huge open field and he has spotted one sleeping in the middle of this field about 200 yards from us. Marius got the sticks up and rifle set and we waited. It seemed like an hour but was probably no more than 10 minutes. I never could find him until he stood up, looked over his shoulder at us and then ran off maybe another 150 yards. He stopped again for a quick look then ran into the woods on other side of the field. How he knew we were there is one of those questions all of us ask when we do all we can to get into position and still fail to get our target.

At this point we wandered back to the truck as it was thundering all around us in the hillsides. Marius went to one other spot just before dark, and he spotted an old buck feeding at the edge. We set up and it took me a LONG time to find him in the shadows of the trees he was near. I finally located him and took the shot. So, 3 shots and 3 down. ( I did notice on this trip my ability to see clearer after having cataract surgery was a God send.)

This was a real old buck. His teeth were worn to his gums and his ears were all torn up from years of fighting.

Conclusion:

First off, I feel as though I should have done a much better job of a hunt report here. Some of you guys write some amazing, very riveting reports. I am unable to do so.
Marius is a class act and very personable individual. I cannot put in words my sincere appreciation of his donation to the AH community. I was treated as though I had paid full price for the hunt.
The rented rifle I used was a Blaser R8 in 300WinMag topped with a Swarovski Z6i 2-12x 50 scope.

All you have to do is read all the other reports on here about Hunt Romania and it is obvious that Marius runs a first class operation and will go out of his way to make sur you have the hunt that YOU want.
I am presently in negotiations with my better half to set up a red stag hunt with Hunt Romania, I know for a fact that Marius will do his utmost best to help me be successful in bagging one.

If anyone has questions or wants more detailed info drop me a DM and I can provide my phone number. If you haven't hunted roe deer you owe it to yourself to give it a try. It is a lot of fun and you are in a beautiful country with very warm, welcoming people.

Lastly, to Marius again, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for this donation hunt and the amazing experience you afforded me. I look forward to chasing a red stag with you in 2026 Lord willing.

Bill, was a real pleasure meeting and hunting with you. Thank you for nice words and report.
When someone is putting down 3 animals with 3 bullets, no mater if is to dark or branches in front, is that any guide can dream. I hope to see you here in the future. Thank you Africahunting for all your support making this possible, for this opportunity to put people together and share here their emotions and experiences.

You will not be disappointed if you book a stag hunt with Marius!

Your report was superb, and the narrative was gripping! Congrats on your hunting triumph, that's a fantastic feat.
