Animal(s) Hunted: Roe Deer
Here is my trip report to @HUNTROMANIA for Roe deer as the winner of their generous contest (https://www.africahunting.com/threa...-for-2024-in-a-random-drawing-giveaway.74930/) for AH members. I flew from Cincinnati - Toronto- Zurich on Air Canada,
Then on to Cluj Napoca via Swiss Air. I was meeting up with my wife after the hunt to take a cruise out of Barcelona. SO I obviously opted tom rent one of Marius available rifles.
Arrived at CLJ Sunday afternoon and was met there by Marius for the 1 hour drive to our hunting area. He arranged and got me settled into my room, returning a bit later for our evening meal.
Day 1:
Up at 4AM for a 5AM pick up. Off to an area pictured below. We did see one female during our early morning outing. WE were dealing with a full moon phase so that obviously worked against us. WE returned to the truck around 9AM and went for breakfast. I would have a few hours of rest prior to an early dinner and back in the field at 5PM.
Our first morning location.
We went to another area for the evening hunt. Glassing a large hillside field. With an hour of daylight left we moved to another area that we had looked at during our morning drive. As we were walking along the field edge Marius motioned to stop as he glassed the far edge of the field near a small grove of trees. He set up the sticks, got me in position and gave me a yardage reading of 205. Took a deep breath and as it slowly left squeezed the trigger. Marius reported great shot he was down. Posed him for pics and was surprised by their size. They have a vast area to roam so it is NOT a quick walk and shoot. And they are on high alert due to the predators in the area.
My first Roe Deer!!
Day 2:
After a rather cool first morning today was much warmer at the start. Spotted one lone female and a couple of foxes. Spent the rest of the AM hunt moving around glassing different fields and edges. Nothing spotted.
We climbed a steep hill this evening. Marius was kind enough to stop ev3ery 50 yards or so to glass so my old ass could catch up and catch my breath. We were walking up a 2 track through the woods. Up on top we came to a nice open field that led to the road we parked along. We saw nothing during our sit so started down staying along the edges. Halfway down the hill we got busted by one in the woods. I was amazed by the loud barking they make, considering their size.
On a side note here, this was my most memorable part of the trip. We were parked alongside a monastery/convent. Listening to the music up on that hillside in otherwise silent solitude was special.
An amazing view

Day 3 and 4 to follow along with a oveerview.
