Sac-au-lait fishing

So I'm from Louisiana, never heard the word "crappie" until I left home.

I'm looking for a 2 or 3 day trip somewhere in LA or east Texas I can take with my 87 yo dad. Mom just passed and I'm looking for something to distract Dad, do things that we used to do when I was a kid. A nice 2- or 3-day sac-au-lait fishing trip would do nicely, looking for something when they start spawning late next month or in April.

Specks or redfish closer to the coast would be cool, too, but Dad has a bit of a gimp of a left arm from polio when he was a kid, not sure he could fight fish like that anymore.

I understood the French, it was the colloquial reference to fish that had me scratching my head.

Lake Fork and Lake O the Pines are in the top 10 of US crappie lakes. Hard to get a bad guide as long as they use Live Scope. I like late spring early summer to fish for them (when they transition to post spawn period). Now is the time for big fish.

Grew up fishing the Atchafalaya basin for sac-au-lait, wasn't til I turned on Bill Dance and heard of crappie. They may be crappie to many, but they are delicious to me

Well, you could go east to Mississippi...hard to beat where the record came from. Grenada would be a good bet. Of course, Lake Fork crappie run heavier in weight by genetics than other east Texas lakes, and you could sample the bass fishing while you're at it.

Grew up in western Louisiana, we called them white perch, never heard crappie until I moved to Texas.

No matter what you call them, sac-au-lait, crop-pie, crap-pie, white perch or speckled perch they are some fine eating. Far and away my favorite freshwater fish. Lake Fork is good, if you want a trophy, Granada in Mississippi is fabulous but tough to fish without local knowledge.

I have a friend in southern Oklahoma who is a professional crappie guide. You will catch fish and most likely, you will get into some 2 pound fish.

@Green Chile , great day on the water, this thread brings back a flood of memories chasing crappie up and down the Chattahoochee, Tallapoosa and Coosa River systems in Alabama. My very best day was a limit of thirty that came in at 52 pounds. Anchored by a 2# 14 ounce black and a 2# 15 ounce white crappie. I could never get over that 3# hump!

Wow...I haven't hit 3# yet. That's a dream fish for sure! They are just the best eating fish. Blackened or fried crappie with hush puppies...let's go!

I grew up in south Louisiana. Sac-au-lait fishing in a small pond full of stumps is a nice way to spend a morning when we don’t want to take a bigger boat out. Sometimes we can catch them from the dock without hopping into the jon boat. Always a fun time.

Toledo bend, border of Louisiana and Texas, plenty of great sac a lait guides with comfortable boats and lodging, very laid back, outstanding fishing

I live in Missouri and crappie is all I have ever heard them called her. Most of my family was from upper state New York, as a child in the 60s they were called strawberry bass. I will be going to fish for crappie in Lake Grenada in Mississippi next month with @Doug3006 and other friends. Supposedly one of the better crappie lakes in the country.
