Hi everyone. I am having a .404 Jeffery built for me. I wish to put a low power scope (1.5 - 4?) on it which will be fitted with detachable mounts as I want to enjoy the open sights also.
Now, I am the meanest of Scots and will be looking for the best price known to man!!! I also, strangely, live in Scotland, but the man who is building the rifle will be in the states later this year so collection can be arranged.
Basically then, hunters, what have you? Any help, suggestions and advice will all be very gratefully received.T
Thank you in advance.

Mean Scot or not, seems a bit twisted to spend the money to have a rifle built and then put on a cheap scope. You might be able to find something in a bargain bin at Wal mart for about $39.95..... Or spend a bit more and buy a good dangerous game rifle scope such as a Leupold VXR in 1-4 or a VX3 in 1.5-5. I have no experience with them but Nikon has a cheap DG scope that some people like and apparently they have a reputation for holding up well.

Ah, I should have made myself clear. I am wanting an expensive scope cheap! That's the mean bit. Be assured I will be putting a proper piece of kit on it. So, back to my original question.
Thank you for taking time to reply.

I recently put a Weaver Super Slam on my .375 H&H. 1.5 x 5, 30 mm tube. Retail internet sites is about $520.
Continue searching for a couple of months if you are not in a hurry and you will find it for around $320. That is what I paid on Amazon during the holidays. If you want a lighted reticle Super Slam, expect around $700-$800. As I am sure you know, the sky is virtually the limit. You can easily spend $3000 for a German/Austrian scope!

The Leupold 1-4 or 1-5 is your scope at about $450 or so. Great value.

I just sold a swaro 1.25-4 on here for $800, that would have been your shrewdest "deal" albeit more cost.

I've seen 1" tube Habicht 1-4x scopes go used for about $600, another great option.

I know a forum member has a swaro 1-6x z6 EE that he'll let go around $1400, that's a great deal if you're after a better scope used.

I just read your reply.

You want a Swarovski 30mm 1-6x extended eye relief Z6. That's your scope. Msrp $2400. I bought two new never mounted ones that were made 5 years ago and got an excellent deal - $1500. That's the scope and that's the price. You won't do better because if a mint in box one shows up for less than that, I'll buy them out from under you to use someday in the future. :)

I love my Nikon monarc 5 1-4x. It's crystal clear, handles recoil from my 416 like a champ, and only costs about 400$. I liked it so much I bought another Nikon and put it on my 375.

I have a Nikon Monarch 3, 1 x 4 with German # 4 reticle on my 404 Jeffery.

Never a problem and like it a lot.

You can buy them on Ebay for less than $300.

Paladin, since you live within the EU you got an great option!
Go to egun.de and look for whatever scope tickles your fancy there. Both used and new scopes available similar to ebay but just for guns and hunting/gun related items :)

Thank you all and thank you Timt for reminding me about egun.de. I must confess I had completely forgotten about it. I suspect that a Leupold is likely to be the choice however. This obsession with Zeiss and Swarovski - and I have both on other rifles - is barmy. (Yes I have succumbed to the hype!) I don't need a scope that allows me to shoot out to 500 metres in the dark! Not for Africa anyway.

Well.. Zeiss Varipoint 1.1-4x24 with the 0 reticle is always nice for close range... ;)

Leupold VX3 1,5-5 with either an illumitaed Red dot reticle or the thin duplex.
have then on my 375H&H and (yes I know) sadly on my 9,3x74R double. take the punch and are small/compact on a DG rifle.

Gentlemen - and maybe ladies, who knows, the man who is building the rifle had suggested a Leupold right at the beginning and I'm getting good vibes on here.
I am going to continue to research to get it right. The rifle and the maker deserve it. I am looking forward to having it.

Hi , As fellow Scot thought i'd add my wee bit. I use a 416 Rigby with a Leupold VX3 1.5/5 illuminated reticle . I have shot roe deer, red deer ,sika deer ,elephant x2 and buffalo x2 with it and found it works great.
hope this helps
cheers Ian Evans

Yes spike.t, that is pretty much our plan. Mean Scot you see! Ian Evans, do you actually, in Africa, ever use the illuminated reticule?
On a wider point regarding illuminated reticules, does anyone think they are an excuse for less good optics? This theory has been postulated to me.

Hi, To be honest no never used it , one annoying thing about the Leupold is that the on/off switch can turn on and flatten battery if you dont check and there are no covers on the adjusting turrets. if you want a hunting chat PM me your phone number and i'll get in touch . i live in Dumfries and Galloway .
Cheers Ian
