Show Us Your Hunting Knife

I have a new favorite knife..

I still very much consider myself a "hobby" quality knife maker.. but Ive made probably 300+/- blades at this point, and have developed a pretty decent eye for "quality, and a solid understanding of what works, what doesn't, what is true/real craftsmanship vs pretty easy tasks to master, what materials work well for what the knife is intended to do, etc..etc..

the blade above was made by MT Maker (steve crites).. Steve donated a similar knife as a door prize for the @Bos en Dal SAFARIS party at TTHA this year.. when he showed me the pics of what he intended to donate, I became immediately jealous and had to have one for myself..

next season I wont be carrying an mdwest knife.. this one will be on my belt... the craftsmanship is excellent (far, far better than what I am capable of).. and the edge on this thing is an absolute scalpel.. Im super proud to own it..

CPM 154 stainless steel, desert ironwood handles, stainless and micarta spacers.. and a really well-executed leather sheath..

Instagram@mtmakerllc is his Instagram...

prices are well below market honestly for this quality of work, the materials used, etc..

A quick follow up on this knife..

I just spent 4 days in camp finishing out deer season with a bunch of .mil veterans.. over the course of the weekend we collectively took 8 good sized hogs and 2 doe..

I very intentionally worked this new knife HARD to see what it could and couldn't do.. and let a couple of the other guys in camp give it a workout as well... it ended up gutting and quartering 5 pigs and 1 doe.. and then we used it to debone 4 of those pigs...

It got through all of those tasks without having to touch up or re-sharpen the blade at all..

the leading 2" or so of the blade could now use a slight touch up.. the rear few inches are still scalpel sharp..

The steel choice and the heat treatment on this thing are pretty incredible.. Im super impressed..

Im definitely going to be carrying this all next season and using it as much as possible.. its a joy to hunt with..

Chris I can assure you my sons blade runner sticking knife ain't cheap. You don't want it breaking in a big boar
Bob
No, none are “cheap” I understand.

The reference to cheap was speaking loosely around plastic handled Hygienic sticking knives like the F.Dick sticker and various clones. Not necessarily cheap but production models that are in every good knife store.

Love to see your pocket knife.
Well, here is the knife and look, it is also from the Muela factory. I don't know the model of this one.

Oscar1975, these are my muela knives, the skinner is well used, but not as nice looking as yours , but the Bowie style knife I find too unwieldy to comfortably use. I only got that style as I was told it was a good all purpose knife shape, obviously by people who were compensating or who had no idea on a working knife

I think they are functional knives. They are good knives and made of quality steel. I hope I have the opportunity to use mine. Enjoy them.

@Nicaburns - Welcome to AH.

One of my favorite things about your knife designs is to incorporate a choil to allow sharpening of the entire edge of the blade while still allowing a substantial heel to prevent any possible hand slippage onto the edge. Well done. I'm especially fond of the one in the top picture. Cheers.

Thank you sir! It is a fun Hobby…. I call it Empty Tomb Forge, hence the hot stamp that looks like a stone rolled away from a tomb door.

I make a few dozen knives a year to pay for some hunting and donate some for charity auctions. But it certainly makes it handy to have nice hunting knife on hand

What is the handle on this one? It is quite impressive

It is stabilized spalted amboyna burl. Thank you… I always tell folks that no matter how hard I work to make the Damascus, God can always show me up with the wood!
The Damascus is impressive, and it you made it then that is very impressive. And the Burl, yeah that caught my eye and I don’t know timbers but that one is prime.

I'm not sure what's more impressive. That you make your own Damascus or the fact that you do it in Atlanta where it's already hot enough to melt metal.

I'd be looking at a power forging hammer in a hurry if I had to deal with that kind of heat. ;)

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
