I will be going to Africa for the first time in June or July 2014. I will be hunting in the Limpopo area of South Africa. My outfitter is Africa Sport Hunting Safaris. I was wondering if anyone has hunted with them before.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I have not, but perhaps someone here has. You did check with the references the outfitter supplied to you right? You can also google them and perhaps turn up further info. Check this site to see if they are listed under the outfitters section for RSA too. Good luck.

Big Tex

Welcome to AH...

Thanks for the welcome guys. I have talked to the references and all seems ok, just thought I'd check here too. I am excited beyond words!!

So, what are you after on your first excursion?

+1, It's great to hear what someone is looking to hunt in Africa.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!!

On this first safari I will be targeting plains game. I am just planning this and working on a budget, but some of the animals I want to take are impala, warthog, blesbuck, bushbuck, and possibly zebra.

I am planning on taking a 338 Win Mag using 225 gr Barnes Tipped Triple Shock bullets. I feel this will be sufficient for everything. I have been told I could take something smaller, such as a 30-06, but I have always been a firm believer in having enough gun, plus a bit extra.

What do yall think of this choice of caliber and ammunition?

Thanks

With zebra a possibility the .338 is a good choice, as they are very twitchy and always moving which makes the perfect shot elusive. If no zebra, no need for the .338 but nothing wrong with it either. I took a .338 on my RSA trip and hunted nothing bigger than kudu.

Great choice of caliber and bullets. Never underestimate those zebra.

Friend took that exact set up last time and he could shoot through some of the bush with minimal to no deflection.
Took Wildebeest with one shot. No issues.

Have a good hunt.

You'll do great with that setup when you combine the power of the 338 with the Barnes bullet all I can say is plains game beware. Have fun and bring back lots of pics to go with your hunting report.

Welcome to AH, BigTexMan, I also use a .338WM, with 225gr. Swift AFrames.

AFRICA SPORT HUNTING SAFARIS

THIS OUTFITTER USED TO BE MY NEIGHBOUR AND I CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM. I KNOW THE PH PERSONALLY--GREAT GUY.

For anyone interested I am back from my safari. It was INCREDIBLE!!! It took 6 animals and had a run in with a black mamba. My PH and I both had a hand is dispatching the mamba. It makes a good story now, but was pretty intense at the time. I posted a new thread under hunting reports. So far I only have the first day of hunting written up, but plan to keep adding to it as I have the time. Thanks again for all the encouragement when I first joined here.

And you were correct Emmanual Safaries. Chris Lordan is a fantastic guy and great PH!!
