SOUTH AFRICA: Hippopotamus Hunt With Pawprint Safaris 2017

image.jpg

@ActionBob we are thinking alike! On the left are 300 gr Swift A-FRAME at 2450 ft/sec and on the right would be the 300 gr TROPHY BONDED BEAR CLAWs at 2400 ft/sec.
As mentioned in an earlier post I am taking the Ruger #1 I got last year in 375 H&H Mag.

@CAustin that will get the job done bru

I think so @norfolk shooter
I will let you know how it goes so you can get back over with Pieter and get a river horse for yourself!

Well today I've got through half a bottle of Oban and still going. I'm now sat in front of tv watching top gear with my 375 H&H in my lap. Sad I know ☹️

Oh she's used to it alright. Be prepared for some drunken crap written by me

Im sick of being surrounded by antis. Im now going to start being just as awkward and nasty as they are. No morw mr nice guy

When I get the opportunity to hunt hippo, it will be on land if at all possible and my first choice gun/ammo will likely be a 505 Gibbs with a 525 grain TSX at 2300fps. I'd be tempted to use only that load, but if the PH wants solids I would use solids in that same load. Or if I was very sure it would be a real close in shot, might be tempted to use 600 grain Woodleighs.

But in a smaller caliber I could be talked into Trophy Bonded Bear Claws or A-Frames for expanding bullets.

I have never shot a hippo and probably never do but considering the facts I think that this really make a good sense......since some years a go if I have the chance to choose.....I would choose monolithic prefragmented tips and solids for hunting......!!!!!

I really like a big, big exit hole in any game........I don´t care about the mushroom resting in the opposite side under the skin......I preffer a good hole and blood everywhere, to have a good trail to follow......

@CAustin , Charlie congrats on 8000 posts, feels like yesterday you were on 5000, time flies.

I would go for expanding bullet on the first shot followed by solids.

Well folks I started packing last night an I think I have this down to a science. My pelican suit case is 24 pounds empty and I have it right at 50 pounds. It does have several things in it for folks I know in Africa that's maybe give pounds. I started the roll aboard and only need a couple of things in it and I'm done.
Anyone want to place bets on how many times I unpack and repackage the bags.

I do at least 3...

Once a week and twice the week you leave for SA.

Art is about right on the repack,I always try to be a few pounds on the light side just so a over zealous airline employee doesn't give me grief!

I do hope for you that it will be a one shot kill!!

I fu.... up, ha ha.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
