SOUTH AFRICA: On The Way To My One Day Safari

Good luck!

Congrats on your Nyala.

I agree, that Giraffe mount looks great.

Granted another half day of hunting tomorrow. Will be hunting hard for sure.

Saw some great lechwe today......Hmmm

I didn't think much of a lechwe until I saw them in the flesh. Beautiful. Not sure I would spend the then $2600 trophy fee, but they sure are attractive.

Whispers of truth no doubt!

whispers of 100% truth. Was something like after 20 years of living a real hunter finally got me. LOL
Good luck on what ever comes your way with your extra hunting time.

Good one bill. Reedy is now after your Nyala I think. He sure got a great buff.

Looks like Johnny is doing well even if it is a short hunt!

Ok guys my day and a half hunt is over. The landowner on the concession ( new concession for Jono) we were hunting asked when possible to hunt with rifles that have silencers??? Since it is new and Jono has been trying for a while to get it I of course agreed, and I was able to borrow a 308 with silencer from a young PH Jono is training. The gun was very uncomfortable for me to shoot and it had a cheap scope on it that I just couldn't get my eye to focus in with no matter which direction I tried. About an hour into the hunt we spotted a nice waterbuck ranged at 305 yards, with zebra and Impala in our way I decided to try for it since with my own rifles I made kills numerous times at that distance. At the shot the waterbuck leaped and took off as all hell broke loose. He ran off with several other bulls and stopped in some brush a long way off.
We decided to sit and watch to see if he would fall. After a good long while he wandered off seemingly unharmed. We checked for any signs of blood but found none which was a relief. I believe my shot went low. We tried tracking the Bulls for almost two hours and got to within 30 yards but the thick brush made a shot impossible, dejected I was unsuccessful we started making our way back to the truck. Time was up. We were meeting the ladies back at the lodge to head out on a river tour which included a nice dinner. As much as I hated leaving this wasant a hunting trip and felt I better get back at the agreed time. I tried to do the right thing......while we were driving out we spotted some beautiful red lechwe about 500 yards out feeding. I asked Jono any good ones in there ?, when he said yes I asked can we get to them? He scanned the situation and said maybe, I didn't want to look at my watch so I said lets go I need to add another trophy to this hunt! After stalking about 45 minutes we were able to close the distance to 198 yards on the range finder, still rattled missing that waterbuck my confidence level was quite low. I squeezed the trigger on the biggest one and he took off and made it into low lying ravine out of sight. We made our way towards where they all ran off, we spotted several lechwe coming out of the bottom minus the one I shot so we knew he had to be in there somewhere. After almost an hour Jono spotted him just in front of us laying down in the brush another shot rang out and thankfully it was over. Man was I relived. After photos we raced back to the lodge showered and made it to the cruise for a nice day. You can add my name to the list of hunters that bushbuck avoided. Next year! You too Mr. Waterbuck.

I wouldn't pay that much also.

Can't believe I missed this thread. Excellent job Johnny and a fantastic Nyala and Lechewe! I'm glad y'all are having an excellent trip and sounds like Jono has a first class outfit. The zebra lodge is amazing and was the most beautiful place in the EC we hunted. We took a Impala and zebra there and saw a monster nyala which was about everything I could do to stay off the trigger. I have to wonder if it was the same one we saw. Well done sir.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
