SOUTH AFRICA: Preliminary Thoughts From A First Timer

Good luck, will be watching for your hunt report.

On a side note to everyone. Let's keep the thread on hunting not politics.

Had the pleasure of meeting tundra tiger this evening. In camp together. Hopefully he’s in his chalet soundly sleeping, dreaming of his first day hunting in Africa while I’m here wide awake reading AH threads at 2:30 am.

Good luck and congratulations!!!! Can't wait to hear about your first trip!! I'm going for the first time next July.

Thank you to all for the kind words. I am packing (hunting gear) and then hitting the sack. It feels SOOOO GOOD to be here!!!! The impala for supper was terrific. Hunting Sailor, I am hunting with Game 4 Africa. Three decades and it's finally happening!
I can’t begin to describe how jealous I am right now. :giggle:
Go get em and stay safe!

Best of luck on an adventurous trips that includes great memories, super trophies and dreams of future returns (this will start about Day 2 of the hunt).

Good luck with your hunt. Have the world of fun. Hope the weather holds out for you. Its pissing cats and dogs at the moment here in Cape Town

Again, thanks for the well wishing; I am grateful. And Everett and his brother are top notch folk all the way. It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know them.

I will write up something longer when I get home. I am using my evening online time to talk to family. I will say day one and I got to check wildebeest and blesbok off the list. Africa rocks!!!! And all you who have said that everything in Africa has thorns... my legs know that now. :p

I am sitting in Tambo awaiting my last leg to Port Elizabeth. I will give a full report when I get back. I don't plan to take any time while there. However, I have an hour so...

Cliff Notes preliminary thoughts:

Lori FREAKING ROCKS!
Qatar Airways FREAKING ROCKS!
Rifle Permits FREAKING ROCKS!

Yeah, I know... huge surprises. I can share more later. I will say Lori had me so ready I blew through SEATAC with my guns with gobs of time to spare. (4 hour layover)

Only negative, kinda-sorta... I just left a young woman a 20 dollar tip on an 8 dollar meal. She about cried. I have a soft spot for waitresses who try hard; my sis put herself through school waitressing. So the negative... watching that young woman so happy over so little... and all I could think about was all the effing lowlife losers we have in the US right now sucking off the government tit doing nothing at all and complaining about it. PISSES. ME. OFF. OK, rant over.

Lifelong African hunting dream... Here I come! :D
@Tundra Tiger
We have the same types of shitheads in Australia. We have a staff shortage. There are heaps of jobs th at they can't fill in hospitality, vets, farming and other areas but these pricks won't get off there arse to do it.
In Queensland some hospitality companies are offering free flights plus a 1,500 dollars bonus for people who want a job. Stuff all takers on that job as well.
Bob.

Impala is so tender and flavorful. Next time you look in the mirror over there slap yourself just to make sure it's not a dream
Good hunting and don't forget your report when you get home.
Pip pip, Talley ho and all that rot old chap.

Thanks for the laugh Bob. I have been slapping myself a lot. 1.5 days in and 3 of my six are crossed off. It is all - not just the animals - incredibly fascinating. I am trying to soak it in. And last night's warthog sausages were one of the best things I have ever tasted.

It's a different world over there just go with the flow and soak it all up. Coffee in the peace and quiet of sunrise. Enjoying the last rays of light with a few sundowners and friends. The animals, the people, the culture.
Glad you are enjoying it and looking forward to y our hunt report.
Bob

There will be a full report when I get home. But 2.5 days in and I have my wildebeest, impala, blesbok, zebra, and this morning shot a magnificent kudu. So my original list of 5 is complete... with over 4 days to go. I am chillin this afternoon. Tomorrow we look for a cow buff. We'll see where it goes from there.

Wik and Collin are fantastic, as is the whole staff. I have hunted with Wik. He has been simply terrific. Again, a full report when I am tucked away back at home in Alaska.

Sounds like you are having a ball. What size was your Kudu and what did you use on your PG.
Bob.

Hi Bob. I don't have a measurement yet but it was exactly what I was looking for: tall, thick, and strong curls. Wik was able to put his arm through the inside of the curls all the way down. I will share photos later. I don't own a cell phone. My photos are on my camera with no way to download and share from here. All 4 except the zebra was with my Marlin MXLR in .338 Marlin. The zebra was with my Marlin 1895GBL/.45-70. The .338 Marlin would have been fine. I think Wik just wanted to see my big gun shoot.
