Straight-pull Mauser 98

Gotta be nerve wracking to pull the trigger on a M98 knowing you didn't pull the bolt down. Like to know what's holding it in battery.

Does it rotate and lock in.

Might as well just buy a Ross!

Would need detailed pictures to make any determination on how they are achieving lockup.

This guy should be an AH member. I mean he has the clothing and a Mauser 98! ;)

LOL, I would love to discover someday that he is on AH! He is truly one of my favorite online personalities when it comes to firearms. We clearly have a shared interest in classic hunting rifles.

Interesting. I noticed that he jiggled with the bolt on final closing. Wonder what that is about. I would not care for carrying it with bolt sticking straight out like that. Pretty much impossible to change shoulders when slinging the rifle.

If my memory serves, this bolt was made by Sommer & Ockenfuss to convert classic bolt action Mauser 98 K into a Straight pull action. I think they also tried to make the same kind of bolt for the Remington 700 too. It was in the end of 90's and in the Kettner book.

Sure looks like a 95 Yugo featuring the Mannlicher bolt system. Old Ferninad was way ahead of his time with the design

I have that feeling on Merkel helix. I would have the same feeling on any other straight pull.
Of course, I am too conservative, and have been shooting turn bolts too many years which creates the habit, so my feeling is totally subjective.

Yes, more details on this rifle and locking system would be interesting to know.

Makes sense I suppose. We all have our own experiences.

i bought a mauser model 96 straight pull in 300 win mag and it has been a big disappointment to me and i wish i had not bought it. it just sets in my gun room, i have fired it about a dozen times.

I to have a hesitation in shooting my ancient old Mannlicher M88 straight pull English Sporter, but I have to look down the sights & not pull away as I want to, haven’t shot it enough to get over that yet.

Finally making decent cases now for the 8x50R so should do better ?

I have to ask why? & i enjoy USOG. U TUBE, a friend has a Swiss K31 beautiful rifle but i think i might get the bolt in the face.

Hard to call that a straight-pull 98. There are several features of a 98 bolt that are impossible to achieve with that setup.
Agreed.

Trying to maintain the core of the 98 and add straight pull action is tough. The “true blue” 98 aficionados will shun it for not having CRF and the straight pull crowd knows there are more viable options that achieve the same (or better) outcome.

It’s a lose-lose situation where they are trying to make it something it’s not. If people think that straight pull rifles make up a niche market of the buying public, I’d like to know what the numbers are for straight pull 98’s is.

Novelty or conversation piece at best.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
