Take down rifles

I,m glad to find this forum, as my current big interest is to get a Take Down for travel to Africa! I was playing with idea to a take down (break down) any rifle, just by unscrewing the barel and action from the stock! So I would ask Fourfive8, is this what have you done?!
I mean could it be done with rifles like CZ550, Heym 21/30SR, Mauser 98, etc. and put the 2 pieces in a sturdy case? Will repeatedly doing so (say twice a year) not damage them? I guess there are gun cases long 85cm (instead of 125 cm), that the foam can be cut out to suit those 2 gun parts. thanks, Peter.

With enough tools, every rifle "can be taken down".

The real "Take Down" can be disassembled and assembled (important!) without a tool.... in the field.

Some Mannlicher-Schoenauer where made this way.

Hard to find one, today.....but still work fine.

Allow me to point you in the direction of the Mauser M03, I have one, in .243 and .300 Wby Magnum. The barrels include lots of options up to .458 Lott (and .404 Jefferey, .375 H&H Magnum. all the way down to .222, 223 ) Check out the Mauser web site for data, for options and prices check out https://www.rjblackwall.co.uk/mauser/ . For demo, Pete Moore did a good video here - check out

Good hunting !

404 Jeffery is no longer made so if you find the barrel somewhere it’s a score.

The word that I heard is that they are phasing out from production, the mauser 03. So, there will be less options to buy.
However, it is only the word, cannot say it is for fact.

Sako's new S20 rifles come apart: the buttstock is easily removed and reinstalled. It does require an Allen key, though.

I have several take down rifles; from .22 to .458.
I bought my first one(a slide action .22) when a teenager and my latest (a .458 DR) just a few years ago.
They have all performed well.

You might be right. For some time there were Sauer 404 and Mauser 03 404 Jeffery barrels available but this is no longer the case. Last I checked the African calibre M03 were being phased out, maybe it’s to help with their relaunching of M98 Magnum rifles?

As @Red Leg suggested (almost 3 years ago) take a look at the Blaser R8.
It's an investment in the future of your international hunting experience.

Accuracy, transportability, dependability, ergonomics, quick second shot, and the best factory trigger on the planet. Oh yes, it also reassembles to the exact point of aim as when you left home.

Indeed.
While most take down models of the day broke open by pressing some form of release lever, twisting the forend to release lugs, then separating fore from aft sections, Steyr used a system also favored by Westley Richards for their Mannlicher Schoenauer Take Down Model. I have one (that was my grandfather's), a cased M1910 - 9.5X57 - .375 Nitro Express Rimless. The system is flawless, being engineered as finely as one would expect of a pre WW2 MS.

Description of MS take down system and use. The only 'tool' required is a bullet tip, pencil, stick, or similar to press into a hole in the magazine cover plate to release spring.

Westley Richards used a very similar system, apparently without the trigger guard lever.

It can be marketing decision for Blaser group (Blaser-Mauser-Sauer), reducing competition to mauser 98 in tropical calibers, and reducing competition to modular rifles - Blaser r8.
But at this point, I can only say it is my speculation on hear-say, no official word on it.

Here are some works of art from Westley Richards in the takedown form:

I will add this as others will read and it is notice however something to take into account for those looking at the Makura Ulrich Takedown.

I have an Makura Ulrich Takedown (Blaser R93 variant) and had 25-06, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag and 375 H&H. The 375 H&H is too long for the magazine box with the Takedown mechanism. Fitted in my Blaser Pro but not the Makura Ulrich Takedown. This would hold true for ALL full length cartridges in my opinion.
