Tanzania Bans Export of CITES Trophies

Dear All,

Before things get out of control with rumors, we are alerting you to the sudden & temporary halt of all trophy exports from TZ. This came to our attention a short while ago when things were not moving so we have actively been working with our outfitters and shipper in TZ to resolve the situation without alarming anyone.

Below is a link sent out yesterday by SCI which confirms what we have already been managing for a couple of weeks and from the details we know, we believe this ban is short-lived since the basis stems from a government misunderstanding unrelated to legally harvested trophies.

https://www.safariclub.org/wha...ted-hunting-trophies

We do not have any further details at this writing regarding timing, however, rest assured that this is a misunderstanding will eventually will be resolved.

Thank you for your continued trust in us & our team and we will be in touch.

Warm regards,
Robert & Rosella

Welcome to African politics!

Nathan's reply to the question in another thread.

Hi Simon - if I am on the right track I believe this is due to the guy that does the final export/inspection/stamps the paperwork for all the CITIES animals in TZ has lost his job...with no one to fill the current void there is no way to get the CITIES paperwork finalized. My sources say that the higher ups in the government will be assigning this job to a new person soon and thing will be back to normal.

I got an idea! Let's open the market for ivory etc and drop the value. That way the poachers won't have an incentive and we don't have to worry about bribes. Hey, if elephant ivory and rhino horn is a commodity maybe people will ensure they exist in abundance....

No wait, let's burn the stock pile for a photo op. Much better for our friends.....

Totally f'n ridiculous and tragic.

Glad to hear it's not a serious issue. I wonder what led to the guy losing his job?

I wondered the same thing.... it is almost impossible to get fired from a government job anywhere, but in Tanzania????

I wonder if this is a sign of what @Wheels said earlier - the new President cracking down on corruption?

Exactly!

Could also be more than corruption, it could be incompetence. The day the president was inaugurated, he went to a hospital in Dar. Some patients didn't have beds. He fired the hospital administrator on the spot. He has been doing things like this since coming in office. He is having his cabinet members and their minions do the same. From what others have said, this sounds like a temporary situation until they get a new person in the job.

I'm liking what the new president is doing. From what I have heard, he has dealt with a lot of the low hanging fruit. Now he is starting to step on toes of powerful people. It could start getting more interesting. It does seem like he has the support of the people.

Sounds good to me.

We booked today for 2017 so hopefully it all gets sorted out!

EXPORT FOR CITES LISTED TROPHIES

TAHOA would like to confirm that Tanzania has resumed the exporting all trophies with immediate effect.

TAHOA would like to apologize for any alarm caused by the SCI crosshairs newsletter sent out by SCI on the 17th of May 2016. SCI did indeed inquire about the exports and TAHOA advised them that it was a temporary interruption due to an internal clerical issue that would be resolved shortly, and there was no need to cause alarm amongst its members.

Yours Sincerely

Just saw this come over the wire from SCI (which is what old timers call email):

"Last week SCI confirmed that Tanzania has suspended the exportation of all CITES listed hunting trophies. It is SCI’s understanding that the Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism has taken this action based on a situation internal to the Tanzanian government."

Absolutely no idea what "a situation internal to the Tanzanian government" means. SCI says they have no idea how long the suspension will last, but the it's not an "anti-hunting" issue. Sure has that effect though.

Glad I'm not hunting in Tanzania this year.
Having guided in Tanzania for the last 15 years and seeing a number of changes, I suspect that with the new President cleaning up there are a few people in key positions that ate suddenly doing their job. The fact that CITES specific animals are targeted, I imagine that the reason is specifically something to do with CITES and the management and issuing of permits and export there of is the centre of the problem. The Wildlife Department has been implementing a modernization of permit issuing, through a central data base.

Thanks Mike. .... everyone getting concerned and confused. It's a bit of a knee jerk reaction to all the anti hunting pressure.
Can't wait to get back in camp, the Kilombero she's calling me. Cheers

looks like they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Now, I started this thread, because I believed what SCI had written, and thought we had a real issue here. And while the news was correct, there is no doubt, certainly with the aid of hindsight, but likely even without that, that the original item was inflammatory. Perhaps SCI should have done a bit more homework before sending this out to every member.

Or maybe I'm being too hard on them.

.....

Or maybe I'm being too hard on them.

Not from where I am sitting.

If they used the word BAN, then they need to do some work on their reporting skills.

...it is already back to business as usual.....

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
