The 243 Winchester for Australian Game

Haaaaah, mind if I use that Bob?
So, F.Vaccaro was sitting at the bar telling jokes and he says, "I have a friend named Bob and last time they X-Rayed his head......." .

Its about time we started a discussion about 25 cals 25/20, 25/35, 303/25, 250 savage,
25/308 257 Roberts 25/06 & 257 Weatherby. May be i left some out, Bob will know! we have done this 243 thing to death. my vote is for the 257 Roberts what do you all think? & why the 25 souper the 308 /25 never got off the ground i think it could be a good cartridge.

Never fired a shot though my brand new shop soiled .25-06 it was delivered direct to the gunsmith to be re-barreled to .280a.i.

I did have some shots out of a.257Roberts at a mates property. The owner told me where to hold to ring the 400yard gong, I was pretty happy with that.

The .25-308 super probably never took off because the 7mm-08 does just fine.

I know Bob is infatuated with the .25's but I have a slight interest in trying a .260rem for something different.

Worked with a bloke called Aspro, a slow working dope.

Let's here some .25 stories then,

Yeah, you missed Bob’s prototype .25 wildcat, the .25/7.7 Jap. Aka the .25RSE (Rising Sun Express) on a Arisaka 99 action.

You forgot the 25-44 Sharps
A 223 round necked up to 25.
Bob

Well @Bob Nelson 35Whelen I don’t know about Australian game but yesterday my 80 year old father used his NEF single-shot .243 to kill a large bodied mule deer buck. Now hopefully I can do the same on a decent whitetail with mine.

MY daughter use to shoot a custom Sako 250 savage i had built from a 22/250 by Bill Marden with a 22 inch stainless Douglas 1-10 twist bbl, a hunting friend made an offer to good to refuse to buy it & like a fool sold it, at the time the 260 REM had come out, i had to have one as i was a great fan of the 6.5x55 i purchased a Ruger 77 mk11 my daughter still claims that rifle as hers, the 260 Rem is a nice mild to shoot rifle with 140 grain REM corlokts it is murder on pigs, i can see why the 6.5 CM has such a following, to bad its hype & bull shit is so strong, i do have a Browning A bolt 6.5 CM its a better case design than the 260 Rem.

Factory ammo only, with wild cats you could go on forever.
@ rdog
The 25-45 sharps is a factory cartridge. It was designed to give the AR platform a bit more oomph and make it legal to hunt deer with in some states of the US.
Brief Jackson of guns and game made a 25 on the 204 ruger case that equals the 250 Savage with 87gn bullets using just 28gn og powder.
The 25s were snd still are brilliant cartridges that were killed off by Winchester bullshit advertising and gullible people believed the shit.
The 25s still have a small but loyal following and even the old three O 25 is having a small comeback. This is because some of today's young shooters are getting granddads old gun and want to use it.
John Barsness did a test between the 25-06 and the 6.5 man bun. The 25 he concluded is a far better hunting cartridge. With the new 131gn Berger and the right twist in a 25 barrel, a 1:9 he conclude the 25 would run rings around the 6.5 as a long range cartridge.
The 25s have been a well balanced dual purpose round long before the 6mm and they have the advantage of being able to handle heavier bullets. Even the so called mighty 240 Weatherby can't do anything the 25-06 can't do better. The king of 25s the 257 Weatherby is a looong range deer cartridge that has no peers.
Even the mild mannered 250 Savage will do everything the 243 will then some without fuss and bother and all the fanfare. Yes it got the advertising hype in the 1920s when it broke the 3,000fps mark but even back then savy hunters realised the 100gn was a better game bullet. A thing that 243 users fail to realise and stick with the 87gn wounder.
I have enjoyed the 25s since Noah played full back for Jerusalem and will continue to do so.
The 25s just seem to work on game the way the 6mms don't and can't.
A bit like the Whelen it just works.
That why I like the 25s and 35s. Those that have used them and then tried others still seem to gravitate back to them. There has to be a reason for that.
THEY JUST PLAIN WORK
Bob

I'm the proud owner of a Tikka M55 re-barreled to 25 Souper (25-08).
Think of it as a modern 257 Roberts, compared to the modern 6mm Rem (243).
works well with AR2209 (H4350) and 100-117 gn bullets.
I like it so much that I sold my 25-06 (and went to a 7x57 Mauser, but that's another story)!

@SteveNZ
The 25-06 would be a fraction better but the old 25 Souper would be a fine cartridge that could be made up to a very nice very light rifle for carrying around N Zed.
What loads are you using in it.
A fellow member @peter Who just bought a nice Remington 30-06 that came with an unfired Remington custom shop 24 inch fluted barrel. He took of the 06 barrel and got the 25-06 barrel fitted and is looking forward to using it.
It's a wonder no one has written about the 270-308. That would be a nice round and not far behind the 270 win.

May be i will have to build one i loved the 250 savage but the 25/308 makes more sense.

The Savage or Roberts would be better. No stuffing around with custom dies and reamers.
If you are going down that road why not a270-308.

RCBS makes dies for it (need to alter as much 243 brass as possible), and it fits in the Tikka M55 short action that I had - otherwise i might have ended up with a 257 Roberts..

I run Speer 87gn TNT for long range wallaby shooting, and Rem 100gn Corelokt for fallow, goats and nanny/juvenile tahr.
I instruct on hunter training courses for NZDA shooting the above animals and find it perfect for new shooters (especially teens) to use.

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen, you ran some numbers in quickload for me previously.

Bob,
I wondered years ago why this isn't a thing as some Aussie states require a .270 cal for certain deer species.
I've seen one Wild Cat in a Remington model 7. It was pretty wild and I passed on it.

I don't recall seeing anything about .270-308 anywhere that I've read.

I do have a 7mm-08 because it's standardised even if it doesn't rate for popularity here in Australia.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
