The Mother of all Double Rifles

One thing is I can't walk all day with this beast. At my age I needed a break carrying it in from the car.
Cal

This thing calls for a gun bearer....

Cal,
It s nice to see you excited about a find. Congrats and enjoy!

My thought exactly!

He sounds as excited as Cody whenever he buys ANY rifle! lol

Cal - instead of Mag-na-Porting you should be the first to fit twin brakes on a double. How cool would that be? ;)

Well, he's not from Texas as he would have known how to pronounce "Bowie" Knife. Must be from some where east of here.

My guess is New Orleans. We called them "yats" because a common greeting there is "where y'at, dawlin"

No effing way. I was born and grew up in South Louisiana. I can usually tell you which ward. That is neither Creole nor urban Anglo. That is upper Northeast.

I grew up between Prairieville and Baton Rouge, and lived on Lon Guyland a couple years when I was first married to my ex-wife. Ex-wife's family is from CT. He doesn't sound anything like them.

He very clearly has non-rhotic R's, so maybe Virginia or South Carolina low country. My money is still on the big easy.

He said Savannah in the video...

Congrats on the rifle. I have never seen a 4 bore. Very cool.

Agree that it could be Tidewater.

Hell of an idea Tim, I believe KDF could handle the job! If Cal wants to send it down here, I will carry it to San Antonio for him. A big black EOTech mounted would also make her much more user friendly!
P.S. not every Rifle!

Cal, I now have a new favorite descriptive phrase thanks to your prior Selous quote “upsetting to my nerve”.

will you shoot it with black powder?
was ammo ever loaded for it with smokeless?
bruce.
Most 4s were black powder at 14 drams or 390 grains. A few had 16 drams, 440 grains, or a full ounce. A few later 4s were loaded with cordite--I know of a couple of Hollands so proved. Today I loaded 14 rounds with black and 14 with smokeless, various powder charges each, but all with a ball. I will shoot tomorrow but my photographer cancelled so all I will ave is targets. However, I do have some video of shooting my last 4 and they are cool but I don't know how to post videos here. The night shot is cool as so much flash and flame can be seen at midnight.

I have shot a 8 but not a 4. So my guess on the weight is that the gun bearer will need a couple guys to help him with the crew served Elephant stopper.

Look forward to seeing your results from the range sesion

Leaving for the range in two hours after a short session with the weights. It's in the 80s all week here and will continue for another week until I depart for a month in South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Too hot to shoot! Anyway, I am unable to locate a gent to film the shooting so this time I'll have to be content with pics of targets only.

Also for all of you: any of you gents who come to the AK double shoot in May are welcome to shoot any and all of doubles, and many more from other locals. If any of you are looking for double shotguns, black powder express rifles, bore rifles, or nitro doubles, email me as I'm thinning out my collection by 90%. I will list them here when I return from Africa the end of August.
Cheers, fellas.

Here are some pics of the shooting. I don't know how to post them in order but they are marked and here is the information:
ball photo, shot with 2 drams or 55 grains just to see the rifling on the equator and take measurements,
4 and 6 drams (110 and 165 grains) print apart
8 drams (220 grains) is apart but closer
10 drams (275 grains) is even better
12 drams (330 grains is just right) 14 drams or 385 grains printed the same but I lost the target!
16 drams (440 grains) is too fast and cross fired.
Power was FFg GOEX, 209 primer, brass case 3 3/4 long, spherical ball of 1400 grains which is actually a 5-bore.

Here are two videos of shooting the last 4-bore I owned--Robert Hughes--which has been passed to a gent in the Lower 48.
Both shots are 16 drams (440 grains) of FFg and a 4 1/4 ounce bullet or 1900 grains.
The night video is in slow motion so place the cursor at about 1:30 to see a cool video of black powder at night.

cal excellent post with the picture demonstrating regulating a double with powder charges.
I did something similar with a john rigby 450/3 1/4 using the old ww2 4831, similar in burning rate to h4831.
this after such powder as 4064 and 3031 as recommended by elmer keith did not work at all.
there was little info in those days!
a few questions.
did you use any lube with those balls, and if so what.?
were they patched and if so with what?
do you intend to try conical bullets?
that would make the old girl talk with authority.
bruce.
