The poor man's Tanzania

If you are like me, a person of modest means who can only dream of hunting in Tanzania, please keep reading. I have found the jewel in the South African Hunting Crown. I recently returned from the Kalahari where I hunted at Thandeka Safaris,. We booked with Lew Harris Safaris and our PH Morgan Harris chose this outfitter for the excellent lion hunting. They are located in the Northern most region just minutes from the Botswana Border. The terrain is similar to East Africa and you can easily imagine yourself racing through the Selous. They have so many horned rhinos you don't even notice them after a while. We took a beautiful black maned lion at a fraction of a hunt anywhere in East Africa. As well, as a free range Kudu (yes free range) and saw hyena, and many wonderful animals. Huge herds of Zebra and Wildebeast running together. We lived in Luxury, our hosts were super nice, the food was incredible and Tommy's hunting stories kept us riveted by the fire at night. I'll be back. God Bless

Lots of Buffalo as well. Saw one herd with at least 40, another client took a 43 incher

Just keep writing, as you have experienced.
Start from finding outfitter, to the booking, your preparations, then flights, then getting to the camp.

Then describe day1, day 2, etc...

Give some details of firearms and ammo used. Species seen, etc

Anything else, like food and lodging, side trips for sightseeing, souvenir shopping, etc

You can find a lot of good reports here, just to give you example.

Sounds like a very nice trip & hunt. I’ve been wanting to take my Wife to Africa and know she wouldn’t like the “tented” safari I went on years ago in Tanzania (even though it was Luxury)...Are the buffalo, Zebra, & Lion Free Range ? Do they conduct Leopard hunts too? Look forward to your report ad photos - congrats on a great hunt

I've never heard that area being given the moniker "poor man's TZ". Did the PH/landowner say that the area is reminiscent of the Selous? Just curious thanks

Tommy is great to hunt with. Was VC there as well? I need to make it back there, specifically for a free range kudu with them. Saw lots of bulls in that area when I hunted it but didn’t find the right bull.

My first safari to Africa was with Lew Harris back in the late 90’s when Morgan was just a young pup. Lew was tragically killed in a auto accident, but we had become good friends and he engrained in me a love of Africa that has led to ten African safaris over the years to not only South Africa but Zambia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. If you correspond with Morgan and the Harris’s, please pass along my greetings. I still have pictures of Lew and myself from those two weeks I spent in SA across four regions, even visiting his home. @Mort Hill
