Cast bullets and Trail Boss loads make wonderful practice rounds with very low recoil. A guy can get in a lot of shooting practice for low cost and no shoulder pain. They also make great loads for shooting hogs, so you get live target and quick reload practice. I use Trail Boss and Cast in a lot of heavy recoil rounds, including the 460 Weatherby. With Express sights, the 200 or 300 yard leaf will usually put you on target at 50 and 100.

Same experience here, I’ll add that using it in standard revolver rounds like 38 special and 45 colt produces great accuracy, and consistent velocity.

That is 2 lefts and 2 rights at 50 yards with Barnes and H1000 but its only generating 1775 fps and I'm getting unburned powder left in the barrel so I don't think I'll be able to get much more velocity out of it. I need some H4831! I have a little bit and I'm going to try it and see if it is worthwhile to buy dome more

Yeah I did. I just haven't seen any trail boss in stock but I have seen the 5744. I would much prefer the trail boss. It looks like 100-103 grains of H1000 makes a pretty good reduced load too. Ha ha

Hell, you have a decent composite group already! Did you check that the right barrel was printing on the right side?

Yep. It was. I shot a few groups with H4831 SC and it was looking pretty decent. I may revisit the H1000. I saw the unburned powder and didn't think I could get snymore speed with that powder, but the book says 120 grains is the max and that was just 105. I had so e unburned powder left in the barrel with the 4831 also. I'm starting to get a feel for the rifle a little more now. I also changed out the fiber optic insert in the sight for a smaller one, which made a big difference and in doing so I found that the front sight was adjustable for height, via an Allen screw in the bottom of the insert. So I can adjust windage and elevation both easily now, which makes things way easier. All I have to do is find the right load now ans then I can zero to it.

If you are having problems with unburned powder try switching to the Federal 215 primers and put a good crimp on the bullet. It will give you much better ignition and a full burn. The short barreled 45-70 is another round that greatly benefits from Mag primers and a good crimp.

Here is the first pair off the bench today. I decided to take the rifle to the range where I could actually sit down with a bag and see what was happening. This is 94 grains of H4350 with a 3/4" long piece of open cell backer rod. I have found that the open cell rod does not seem to leave the residue on the case neck like the closed cell did. Both of these chorongraphed at approx 2130fps. 4th shot was just a touch low, maybe the gun,

maybe the trigger monkey. The pic with my finger is the first shot at 100yds

by the third and fourth. Which I considered decent at 100 yards. The gun is doing right I believe, and once I tighten my shooting up a little everything should be good.

The targets show a gun with pretty darn good regualtion. Unfortunately they also show evidence of you reacting to the recoil. I would suggest you find a way to shoot that rifle with a good shoulder protector like a Past and the ability to rock with the recoil. I would bet that if you filmed you shooting you would see a noticeable flinch. You do not want to let this flinch get ingrained because they can be really hard to get rid of.

Here is 2 pair of Barnes TSX with the same load. They chrono'd at 2111fps, however they were crossing. That is at 50 yards. Still minute of buffalo but I suspect at 100 yards they're gonna be out. I may slow them down but I do t want to get much below 2050fps.
I will try the Raptors next with this same load. I think they will shoot pretty much in the same group. I have dabbled with them here in the yard and they seem to shoot almost same POI as the CEB solids

You ain't lying. Yeah I actually have picked one up, an occasional flinch, that is. It wasn't from this gun, however the heavier triggers on this gun, plus getting used to shooting two different triggers is requiring some getting used to. I am working that out though. You're right though, almost anytime you see that left to right dispersion then the problem is in the trigger pull.

This was the last off hand pair at 30 yards.
Fired a total of 36 rounds today and I feel pretty good about this load. I think the Barnes load will be good enough for practice. I may work on it more and try a few more powders and charges. It is time to get to shooting off the sticks and off hand, working on reloads and such.

Got in a little more trigger time today. Tried out some swift A Frames. The rifles seems to like them with H4831sc which is the powder I'm running with my CEB bullets as well. I get roughly the same result with a 2 grain increase with RL22. So if I'm shooting 108gr of H4831 with a bullet the 110gr of RL22 seems to give me pretty much the same speed and the same grouping.
Today 108 of H4831sc with the AFrame gave roughly a 3" horizontal spread and was crossing at 50yards. 110 narrowed it about 2 or 2.5" and 111.5grain which is the maximum load in the Swift manual put them pretty much on the same plane at 50yards. 1 was a touch high, maybe 1.5" this was maybe me, maybe the gun. All groups were fired off sticks standing.
I get pretty much the same grouping with 108 grains of H4831sx and the CEB bullets. I will chronograph this load as soon as I get a chance, according to the manual it should be 2150ish. The CEB are running right around 2100-2120 so that should about 2150 or so with the Aframes and 111.5 grains.
