Thinking of complimenting my collection with a 7mm remington magnum..

Get yourself a nice Blaser R8 7RM for that kind of money.

Plus it won't have a muzzle brake.

I've got enough distance shooters for now... (2) 7MM REM MAG's, .300 RUM and a 300 WBY. I don't mind a Muzzle Brake, they come off and suppressors go on or a cap to protect the threads. Several of my rifles are set up this way. Although, only the 450 Dakota, 300 Weatherby, and 300 RUM have brakes on them... Blaser, not sure about them.

It's a leap of faith giving the Blaser R8 a go and it's not for everybody.

However, for those looking to travel and hunt, there isn't a more compact and reliable system available for the same price. Comparing a takedown CRF to the Blaser R8 is very close in price...if the CRF comes with just one barrel. Add another one and expect the price to be above $15K. Plus the Blaser maintains the ability to shoot from .17 caliber all the way to 500J with the same stock.

Bought my first 7mm Rem Mag in 1963 a second in 1967. Used both for awhile with the first purchase being my primary rifle. Used Nosler partitions from the beginning with IMR 4350 . Groups were almost as good as my 722 222.
Great rifles back then. Perhaps not as cosmetic as the M70 but highly reliable .
Hunted the full spectrum on NA game and except for big bear it did the job. I decided to use a heavier caliber on them.

Why go boring when you can get a nice 280rem,280AI or a 7x64.
All will do pretty much what the ho hum box store 7mm REM mag will but with more class.
Availability shouldn't be an issue especially with the 7x64 in African countries.
Personally I would take any of these three over the mag any day. Is the extra 100fps worth it.

My personal preference is meopta.
A nice Optica 5 in 3-15x44 or a standard meopta 3.3x10x44.
I have two 3.5-10s on my rifles and they are excellent pieces of glass.
@sgt_zim bought an Optica 5 on my recommendation and has not been disappointed with its performance.

One is good the other is overrated take your pick which way you place them
Both are like the good ol ought six, get the job done but nothing to write home in song and story about.
As @CBH Australia is finding out the 7x64 is an excellent cartridge and been around longer than the 270 or the 7mm mag and still getting the job done without fuss or bother. Can be loaded near the mag without raising a sweat because of the design. Old Otto was into something when he designed it

Trijicon AccuPoint 2.5-12.5x42 comes in below $900, has illumination and leaves some wiggle room for bases & rings.

7PRC could be a consideration...if it's still around in 50 years or so. At least that's my opinion. This is a specialty cartridge made specifically for long range shooting to take advantage of longer, high BC bullets. Any game animal inside of 500 will never know the difference because the ballistics inside 500 are nearly identical. It's just another in a long line of "latest and greatest magnum" that will soon be at, or nearly obsolete. 7RUM, 7DAKOTA, 28NOSLER, 7WSM, 284WIN, 7SAUM, 7STW, 7WBY...etc. You get the point.

A traveling hunter should always take into account ammo availability to the places they plan on hunting. Any of the cartridges in that list above combined with lost ammo turns your beautiful killing machine into a stick with a 7mm hole down the center. Congratulations, you traveled halfway across the world to rent a camp rifle.

I believe you are making a wise decision with the two you are considering.

In 50 years mate neither you nor I will care what cartridges are around. They could be using .17 whomp- em -up laser beams to take game by then but we will both be dead by then so who cares what will be around in 50 years. Enjoy life now with what you have/ like/ need or can get.

I got the 2-10x42. Nice scope.

98% of my hunting is under 100 yards. I have a vx3 3.5-10x42 on my 280 AI for long range. If an animal is too far away for that to give me good resolution, it's too far away for me to pull the trigger on it.

Absolutely love maple stocks especially curly or tiger stripe maple. Almost impossible to get in Australia. Also love a nice piece of walnut.
