I am just about to have to go on Gunbroker and buy some .300Win Mag ammo for my July Safari in the Eastern Cape. I have my new R8 barrel and have been shooting the 180g Barnes ammo. I did find some Serbian ammo for practice but the Barnes is hard to find. I have alerts set on Ammoseek.com but week after week goes by and nothing.

@Philip Glass take a look at Choice Ammo. Somebody on another thread posted a like to this Montana based ammo maker and I quickly ordered a few boxes of 06 and 7mm mag.

They list the 180 gr Barnes on backorder, but it's worth a try to put your name on the list.

If you get in a bind, two of my sons-in-laws shoot 300 WM and they have a bunch of Hendershots Extreme Ammo with 180 gr Swift A-Frames. I can get you a couple of boxes. They also have a bunch of the Serbia stuff. Good for target and deer hunting, but the velocity is a bit lower as I recall.

I hate to see this kind of price gouging. Try to buy building materials now. OSB that was $8 a sheet is now $32. Copper wire that was $40 a roll is now $140. inch and 1/8 plywood that usually is $35 is now $100. Roofing steel went from $2 a square foot to $4. and 2x4 studs went from $2 each to $6, And when I mean "used to" i mean just 6 months ago.

At the local home Depot yesterday a 8' Doug Fir 2X4 stud was $8. It was $2 late last year when I was building. Lumber prices have gone ballistic.

You know the situation is getting desperate if you are a reloader considering buying $10+ a piece ammo of a different cartridge to pull down just for the bullet. And really, really desperate if you save the powder from the pulled down cartridges in a baggie.

Right now it seems a little easier to find a few boxes of quality factory ammo of the right kind with the right bullet than finding that component bullet to reload. This shortage situation sure seems worse than the last two of these. Glad I started setting back a little extra when I did. Right now there are some component bullets that are simply not available at any price from any source, including the scalper market.

Right now specifically 400 gr 416 TSX and 400 gr 416 A-Frame and 300 gr 375s of the same two flavors. I have enough of each for my purposes but have scoured the net the last week or two and nada. So I've been shooting other, more readily available subs I have in my own stock when I go to the range like the Hornady DGS or DGX along with a few older Hornady RN Interlocks and RN "solids".

Oh no, I have enough for my use. I had geared up with a couple of extra boxes of Swifts and TSXs in 2019 prior to a planned DG hunt for 2020 that got washed out and again cancelled this year but is hopefully re-set for 2022. And as been shown on this forum over and over- plenty of help out there if needed. Thank you for that offer- super people here!

Currently, I am seeing for sale and have actually picked up enough of the similar practice and range bullets like the 300 and 400 gr Hornadys in 375 and 416. But even they are not everywhere and are getting more expensive. The only 416 Swift A Frame bullets I see available today is a single box of 350 gr that are on bid. And can find no 400 gr 416 TSXs anywhere at any price.

I was thinking hypothetically in a "what if" scenario right now for anyone, especially if they were a reloader, planning a big hunt and didn't have enough of the right bullets to use or practice with. To use the ammo you have a rifle set up for, are used to shooting and are counting on as a reloader would either require switching to factory ammo or buying factory ammo to cannibalize the bullets. This shortage is deep and widespread and intl shipping of even such inanimate things like pieces of copper and lead, component bullets, is practically a no-go.

I should have looked to see if they had any Large Rifle Magnums. Most of the rifle shooters use what is now called a "mouse gun" i.e. an AR - 15 which uses a small rifle primer. Some holdouts still use the M-1A the civilian version of the M-14 (.308) with a Large Rifle Primer. I'm not aware of anyone using a caliber requiring a Large Rifle Magnum. In Michigan the hunting is done at relatively close range, so there is very little demand for a "long range" caliber like the 7 MM Mags or the 300 Win. Mags. Gun stores might on occasion have a "brick" of 1,000 LRM primers but seldom more than that. I have in fact had to purchase partial bricks because someone else had already purchased one or two hundred primers out of it. I have somewhere around 3,000 LRM primers but would like to have a minimum of 20,000.

Did you recently have foot surgery? If so, what for? How is your shoulder coming along?

I ordered 400gr tsx 416 rigby ammo from Buffalo arms. But I received 416 ruger ammo. May be my mistake. I was looking for 416 rigby ammo and Buffalo arms popped up and I ordered. I called them and the refused to cancel the order. The guy made numerous racial comments. I am stuck with two boxes of ammo for which I dont even have a gun. Some of these ammo company do have stock of components. This is the best time for them to make a sale as known big companies are sold out. Perfect storm.

You are in for a great time with your Whelen. It will become your go to rifle for every thing. You might have to store it elsewhere to give your other rifles a go now and then.

Yes Art I did have foot surgery 10 days ago. It got to the stage I couldn't walk 100 yards. Twisted my ankle and had to have 2 tendons cut and relocated, straightened the heel back up and a few screw wires and a plate put in. No load bearing for 6 weeks then start applying a bit at a time but THATS life.
Shoulder is coming along slowly about another 8 months.
