I am just curious what the consensus here is. I shoot lefty and that adds to not only the cost of my guns but also their availability. I have guns I would kill to take on trips but find myself almost unwilling to risk losing them in transit. Any of you buy a “lower” end gun to travel with and just admire the Winchester Model 70 Supergrades and Custom Dakotas in the gun rack rather than risk them to Africa and the airlines??

I've taken out a "personal articles" insurance policy that will replace my rifles if I was to lose one on a flight. I'd rather lose a super grade and have to buy a new one that hunt with a rifle I didn't really want to use. I've started driving on all my US/Canada hunts just to avoid flying with a mountain of gear. Not an option for all trips though.

Get some insurance if you feel like you need it and go for it. They are made to be used

There's a ton of people from all over the world flying to parts unknown with doubles and other high dollar guns. I do have an airtag in my gun case in case it would go missing. Last year I arrived to my home airport, Pittsburgh, PA, from being in South Africa. My gun case did not arrive, I checked my app, saw my guns were in Newark, I spoke to the baggage lady, described my bags, left the airport, the guns arrived the next day to my house.

Buy insurance and take your own rifles wherever it is permitted for you to do so. The insurance through SCI is inexpensive, and I’ve heard from a thread on here recently that there are other providers even more reasonable. Nothing like taking your own firearms. Not that an outfitters rifles are substandard because many of them have excellent and dependable rifles to lend, but I would rather have mine that I have been shooting to get ready for the hunt.

Being stuck shooting lefty is lousy. Even if a gun is listed as a catalog item that doesn’t ensure it’s in regular production. I have learned if I want something and see it I better buy it bc I may not get a chance again. Took me 10+ years to find my lefty Win model 70 in .280 rem. Even now I see some Ruger lefty .375’s are hitting the market. I am tempted to buy one now bc they may not be as easy to get later.

AirTag is a must-have! My guns have gone temporarily awol twice. Very handy and reassuring to know exactly where they are located ... on the ground anyway. I use Android but my daughter has Apple. She would track the gun case from her home and text me images of the gun case's location while I was traveling.

All of my guns have not been hunting, but any of them could go at anytime. My most expensive rifle has been to Africa and to Alaska. Most of them have never left Arkansas or Florida. All of them are insured, some more than others. The one that has hunted the most is the one I have had the longest. M70 bought in 1974 for $130.

I have an inland marine policy on my guns that I travel with either by auto or plane or train. It will pay for almost anything that happens without deductible. Granted, i'm right hand, but they are not making any more of the firearms that I own. Travel with what you own or rent.

I just hunted 2 weeks ago with 2 nice Dakota rifles. Traveled from TX through Paris to JNB...to Bulawayo, Zim and all over creation on rough roads, etc. Take a soft case with you! Some guns can't really be replaced but hunt with your favorite guns. That's what they are for.

Get a rider on your homeowner's policy for piece of mind.

With State Farm, you can change the specially insured items when they are safe and sound back in your safe and move the insured value to something else that is more likely to be stolen, like your wife's $25,000 tennis bracelet!

I've got some pricy ones, but they are meant to be used!

When they are in the safe, with multiple levels of security protecting them, I transfer the insured protection to articles more likely to be taken.

I have traveled 8x to Africa with my custom LH M70 rifles. Never a problem. Hard to find a LH 416 Rem. Had to have one made.
