Hey Guys,
I'm trying book a flight to SA and the best fares are thru Frankfurt, I would much rather go directly from the US to SA. I am wondering what your experience has been going thru Europe or the Middle East with guns, any undue problems

Franfurt is excellent trucked thru it many times ...one question are you changing airlines...if not you never see your guns ...if travelling on partner airline same deal ...only a problem if different airlines that do not have automatic luggage transfer.

Frankfurt operates with German efficiency. As long as the paperwork is in order, it’s pretty straightforward. I connected through there in 2022 on my way to Windhoek. I wasn’t supposed to need to claim my rifle, but due to problems on the inbound flight, it became necessary. Checking the rifle back in took a while, but wasn’t a big problem. Thank goodness Gracy travel had me all set up “just in case.” The German import permit takes a while to arrange. Get on it well before you go.

Just went trough Frankfurt on the way to Namibia in October with Lufthansa. No issues whatsoever, but had required firearms permits in order prior to flying.

Did you fly Lufthansa all the way or did you use another airline also for part of the trip?

I have flown through Frankfurt with guns three times since 2021. No problems. I'm always booked on airlines that are part of Star Alliance Group. Haven't required the Frankfurt gun permit but I can see where it could be a problem if I was bumped due to cancelation and had to switch to another airline not part of the group. In the future I will probably get the Frankfurt permit just in case.

One way I'm usually connected through Zurich. Very much recommend it if you can. Swiss are very gun friendly. Swiss Air gun handling fee is very cheap (Lufthansa is very expensive!). No special permit needed. Both airports are very nice and comfortable for long layovers. I'm usually stuck in Europe for 10-11 hours. I've been encouraged to take free transit bus to opera house district in downtown Frankfurt during layover but I'm usually too pooped. Unwilling to risk something going amiss and not getting back to airport on time.

I flew Lufthansa all the way, well actually Discover Airlines Frankfurt to Windhoek which I think is a Lufthansa owned airline so essentially the same.

I’ll be transiting FRA on my watch to Namibia in April. I’m using Gracy to handle the paperwork. I understand that there are airline and country forms needed and some cost involved. I can’t recall the amount, but a few hundred I believe will cover it. The lower cost and convenience of flying thru FRA makes the costs not worth considering.

May I asked the cost to fly rifles on Lufthansa? Are you charged per case or per rifle? Thanks.

Better check their website. Regs can usually be found under "sports equipment." I think it was per gun case. Fairly certain they only allow two guns per passenger. Air Canada allows three guns per passenger but only airline I know of that does. As I recall, Lufthansa gun handling fee was around $220. Quite steep. Air Canada, by comparison, charged $55 Canadian. I pay the gun handling fee at start of the flight and never see the guns again till Joberg even though I change airlines in Europe ... as long as the connecting airline is part of the Star Alliance. Best to put both guns in one case to avoid fees for an extra oversize item.

I think it was 375Fox who offered up the excellent tip to purchase round trip gun handling fee at Joberg airport when switching to domestic airline for flight to lodge destination. Domestic airline will not be part of Alliance so guns will have to be checked in with them and fee paid.

I can help you with guns thru Frankfurt. But you asked about Europe and the Middle East.

London Heathrow is very easy (IMO the easiest) just pricey. You just telephone them your gun information and they place it into the reservation. 72 hours before you fly you call to confirm it gun is approve and if so you will complete your paperwork work at the airport. Qatar is tricky with guns. If every flight is on Qatar Metal no problems. One flight not on Qatar metal problems. I recommend using an agent for Qatar. Emirates easy too. The form you complete online and it’s done.

Do not buy these tickets without a TA. There are many pitfalls with the permits and airlines. I've not heard anyone mention the transfer permit which I was told was required just to go through Frankfurt. Do not change airlines with guns no matter the alliance. Bad practice as they have different rules.

It is very rare to find one airline that can accommodate the entire route for a Safari. The best you can hope for are partner airlines that have some motivation to accomplish successful transport.

I applied for the transfer permit about 8 weeks in advance. It didn't arrive and a week before, I called and got an exceptionally good humoured German policeman who filled it out whilst I was on the phone and emailed it to me.

He said to me that it is absolutely essential that you have the transfer permit, even if you don't take possesion of your rifle. He said that they sometimes do sport checks and it is a criminal offence not to have the transfer permit.

Fairly painless process though and the airport is absolutely fine.

I think I paid EUR 250 for gun carriage. I had a major problem flying back from Windhoek where the computer system wanted me to pay for an additional bag in addition to the 250 handling fee. The Windhoek staff were great but it had to be revolved in Germany, which took about 45 mins. I was told that there had been a lufthansa computer system fault that day and there were several other people in the same position with gun cases

I have flown to Joberg, South Africa from Toronto four times 2019-2023. Every time with at least two airlines, sometimes as many as four different ones. Every time the guns checked at departure and never saw them again until reaching my final destination. Airports: Toronto, Heathrow, Joberg, Zurich, Franfurt. All airlines belonged to Star Alliance. I paid the handling fee charged by airline at embarkation and no more. I did not acquire a transfer permit for Frankfurt. No one asked for it. Again, in the future I would get the transfer permit in case I was unexpectedly delayed there and flight plan changed. I have always booked my own flights and done my own paperwork for guns. And engaged assistance at Joberg to expedite police check there. It can be done without a travel agent.

I had not problem taking my gun to Azerbaijan on Qatar. Just booked the flight and called and told them I’d have a gun. Transited through Doha. But as you say it was all Qatar operated flights.

Good to know. I am glad to hear that route is working out for folks.
Maybe @TRAVEL EXPRESS can comment on the transfer permit. I just know it has been a hot topic of discussion here many times. Maybe it is no longer required.

I usually have at least three airlines to get to Africa but one main international carrier. The main routes we use are served by Delta and Qatar. For most itineraries it is not "end to end" as we usually have a domestic carrier in Africa to get to the final destination and in my case AA to get going. Regardless of the route and regardless of what people say online you do not want to interline from one airline to another with rifles. There are many issues that can come up ie the second airline wanting to inspect and asking for more or nonexistent paperwork.
I am not trying to be a know it all but I see the issues and have lived them. Someone buys their ticket on their phone, then has a big mess up with rifles, and they instantly become the ambassador of "it's not worth it use a camp gun".

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
