Turkey Calls

Tss, binoculars, thermocell with extra pads and juice. 1 aluminum call my brother made with scratch pads. 1 small knife. 1 small little hand snips. I don’t leave home without my mouth call and if I do I go back home to get it. Been turkey hunting 32 or 33 seasons. Spent more time in the turkey woods then 99% of the people out there. Our season used to be 45 days and I spent 45 days before that scouting hard. But that was back in the day of no trail cams or fancy decoys and when you could kill 5 birds here in SC.
I used to sit in the woods scouting and stay close to birds to try to see their spurs and would hunt the biggest bird I could find opening day. Back when I would literally have 75+ longbeards scouted out preseason but had lots of access back then that has dwindled to not much now.

Orangeburg, Dorchester, bamberg.

Go-to secret call? Small, simple slate with peg for low volume “putt and purr”. :)

Woodhaven real hen has been my go to call for years, and I have several pot calls, primos power crystal titanium is my favorite with those, I use a lynchs jet (grandpa’s) for soft tree talk, there’s more stuff in my vest than I care to talk about

Interesting info and lists so far! For success, learn how they think. In high wind, try loud yelps sparingly, using wing bone or diaphragm. Always try to get close to area or direction they want to go, especially if hens around. Get close as possible before calling. They have extraordinary hearing. Low volume putts and purrs from slate call are extremely effective. Been hunting and living around them for 61 years.

I will be chasing Mr Tom in orangeburg county in the am!

Piggybacking off the turkey thread...
What's in your vest? What's your go to?
Any custom calls?
Slate call’s old yelper has been my go to ever since I started
I have a few other slates
One a old man made me he had. A slab of slate and he fitted it in a turtle shell
I have had a few box calls and I try a few mouth calls but they tickle at the wrong time every time I have tried to use them seriously

Forgot a call a man in ga gave me his name to every one was turkey Johnson
I talked to him when I first want to turkey hunt. A old peach snuff can with a pice of rubber over it he picked it with his thumb.

He showed me about 15 cigar boxes full of beards

I've seen a slate in turtle shell, I don't own one but very cool!

Calls are fun and relatively easy to make. Have made quite a few over the years. Wing bone yelpers are simple. Body of an old ball point pen works similarly. An old turkey poacher from Texas showed me how to make a type of peg and slate call using a flattened and bent over nail with a flat rock as the slate. Pic shows wing bone call and a nail and rock call. :)
