Have encountered two opinions on obtaining visa into Mozambique one was good to embassy in DC to obtain second opinion was I would be able to obtain visa in Tete airport. Spoke with embassy they claim only they can provide visa. PH states it can be obtained at airport. Don’t relish idea of sending off passport in mail. Anyone have experience recently ? Thanks

Was in Mozambique last year and returning this July. Got my visa upon arrival at the airport in Tete. It does take a while, first come first served. Cost less than $100 US. Staff are in no hurry and forms, photographs need to be filled out. Had a “hunting professional” (Guy with a tv show) Behind me in line. He kept complaining about the process. His visa was really slow to process. Just be polite, pay, and remember you are on African time

Africa time there… patience is best policy. Extremely poor country. Step off the plane in Tete and you will know not in Kansas anymore. Small airport. Might need a little help with visa as it is in Portuguese unless recently changed. Short form and not complicated. Visa fee can be variable but usually about 100 or a little less. Be polite and patient- you will gain nothing by being pushy. Locals are generally a friendly lot there.

You will get your Moz visa upon arrival in Tete. Last year there was some confusion around this issue. Gracy Travel spent a fair amount of time trying to sort it out before I left and ultimately came to the conclusion obtaining a visa prior to departure was not going to happen. As others have mentioned, once you arrive at Tete airport (Not in Kansas anymore is a fact) you will stand in line for somewhere between 1 and 6 hours waiting to get photographed and your visa issued. Patient and polite are operative words. You are now on Africa Standard Time. Their “new” system will likely go down at least once.
FYI - On your return the Police will shake you down for a “tip”. Carry some wadded up singles in your pocket. That won’t be enough so you will want to have a couple $5 bills in your wallet. Do not let them see any money on you beyond $5-$10. That is all you have! They will likely hold you up until you are damn near going to miss your departing flight. Tete is an absolute shit hole. But Mozambique is a wonderful hunting country. And all the trackers, skinners and staff I’ve met have been great people with a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyable to be around.
hurley, who will you be hunting with and what area?
Best wishes for a wonderful trip.

Anyone needing overnight accommodations in Tete will not go wrong with Zambezi Riverside Lodge. Really inexpensive (American dollars) and super nice. Also very secure. Right on the bank of the Zambezi river. They can arrange a boat ride to a nice restaurant for you. Their chef was also very good.
Here’s a link

A twist that has worked well for me on bribes, and worked very well in Moz; I carry copies of Andy Stanley’s book, ‘How Good is Good Enough?” When I’m asked if I have something for them, I get very excited and tell them that I actually did bring them something. I’ve left quite a few bewildered police officers leafing through the pages of a solid Christian book. So far it is 100% effective and I have yet to hand over a single dollar.
