Wanted A Square Rifle

@TTundra
Yes the OP gets the first shot at it. If SLG don't I have asked for it.
To be very clear and follow AH Values..

Great to here @krish

@NLVMike
I think the rest of us would still love to see pics! A few Hannibal admirers and owners here. ;)

Anything does not have Hannibal model on the action is almost after market A2 made by custom shops. Not True A2 is what I have been told. Dont hold the same vslue as Original A2 made by ART. Like CZ 550 416 Rigby which is not Real English made Rigby.

I was under the impression that many of the older ones did not have “Hannibal” and “Model” on the receiver but the newer ones all did? Anything is possible though. That said if something were an out and out fake you’d think it would be a complete fake.

Edit: I know you were just addressing non-A2 builds and not necessarily fakes

Correct, the first did not have that same "hannibal" script on the receiver. The lettering stamps also improved in both font and placement later in production as well. Mine is an earlier Hannibal and has the "rougher" markings.

you can tell what model it is simply by looking at the stock and action. the std LA calibers were built on M70 actions and the big boys on the Enfields. ALL great shooters (if A-Square.) Most were full-length bedded (so if you see the magic red "spot putty" in the bbl channel, it's v. likely an A-Square.) The cut of the stock pretty much gives it away, and seldom did they have any checkering. I've seen a number of .500 A-Sq guns that are simply (much lighter weight, non-'coil-check stock) sporterized Mausers or Enfields and clearly they are NOT the same as orig A-Sq. .500 A-Sq was a popular PH stopping caliber once upon a time...

lol time limitation expired whilst preventing lunch from burning... you can tell what model it is simply by looking at the stock and action. the std LA calibers were built on M70 actions (Hamilcar), some of the std Mag calibers up to .495 were also built on the Rem 700 push-feed action (Caeser) and the biggest boys extended Mag (Hannibal) on the Enfield P17 mauser-style. A Ghengis Khan was a varminter Hamilcar with heavy bbl, etc. ALL great shooters (if A-Square.) Most were full-length bedded (so if you see the magic red "spot putty" in the bbl channel, it's v. likely an A-Square.) The cut of the stock (its girth, the huge butt, and large grip) pretty much gives it away, and seldom did they have any checkering. I've seen a number of .500 A-Sq guns that are simply (much lighter weight, non-'coil-check stock, std pistol grip) sporterized Mausers or Enfields and clearly they are NOT the same as orig (9.5-13.25 lb!) A-Sq. .500 A-Sq was a somewhat popular PH stopping caliber once upon a time...It'd be fairly easy to create an identical M70 Hamilcar (or IMO less-desirable Caeser) today using the CNC stock tracing/duplication methods, but where the design really pays dividends is in the larger, P17 magnum action cartridges that otherwise offer quite the shove! Some really neat caliber choices were available! I bet there are just a few of certain calibers in the world today...$$$ The $7K 577 above is a good example. More modest wood typ yields <$2K-$4K for A-sq. depending upon caliber and condition.

It's crazy but Broadsword still has a website that discusses some of their stuff. Art's Any Shot You Want book covers everything pretty well (including a great comparison pic of a std factory buttstock vs. the A-Sq). I have his .338 A-Sq (earlier, SAAMI-approved 338-378 Wby variant) and true to his word, it recoils like a 7mm Mag with heavy (100-105 gr) handloads. Obviously super accurate, too. It makes me giggle a bit when I see Lapuas at ranges. :p A few of us call the 338 L the "338 Needmore!" What's even more crazy is that the guy I bought it from years back had other A-sq caliber guns for sale and failed to inform me at the time of sale!? :( I would've bought 1 other (M70 338-06) but not the .416 as I already had one in M70. They were going for about $1,800 mint a decade ago.

Uncertain if I'm allowed to post the links (not really competition of AH, but...) so thus the photos.

A-sq .425 Express (on an old Rem mod 30 Enfield mauser-style action) 7.5K on GI. c. 1980 (early,) I've never seen open sights on em, but apparently they came on the big boy calibers.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
