I agree with not wearing wool in the heat. AND 1 cotton socks from Walmart. They are really soft and you can buy a package of 10 pairs for less that the. It’s of one smart wool.

Why do you guys wear wool or "smartwool" in the heat?

A thin wool sock in the heat is much better at reducing the chance for blisters. They really do wick moisture better. Cotton becomes a wet rag.
For marathon runners it is very common to wear thin smart wool socks, even in hot marathons. A good long hunt and a marathon aren’t too much different.

Exactly. The runners weight smartwool sock Is the best hot weather sock I’ve found. I wear them all summer on the farm in Bama.

Going to Zambia in early November for Buffalo and I'm getting a new pair of boots (either Russell or Courteney) and was wondering what socks you all have good results with? Normally I wear a thin liner sock and then a medium weight sock when hunting but not sure if I need the liner sock with these boots? Wearing the two socks will obviously affect the size I order so I wanted to see what everyone has used in the past? Thanks for sharing your experience.

Wool socks! I have recently been turned on to Darn Tuff socks from Vermont. They are really good and have a lifetime warranty. If you are not using wools socks you’ve been misguided!
I have Russels as they are custom made. Courtney is fine if you have wide feet.

Thanks folks for all the replies. I've read them all and will take everything into consideration. Looks like Smartwool is the overall suggestion and I'm going to try them with no liner sock. I appreciate you all taking the time to give your advice.

I was in Zambia for a few months last year for work, including November, and it was damn hot (40C+) and exceedingly humid before the rains. I was in the Southern Province and wore my Courteney Safari's everyday. What ever socks you end up with my advice would be to keep a spare pair with you in the field and swap them out at midday.

Beware of any product that claim the fabric is made from bamboo. The slogans which accompany these products imply the product is made from natural bamboo fiber. Frequently they lay claims to various health benefits and some sort of moral value as a natural product. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those bamboo products are made from rayon.

Rayon is made by chemically dissolving cellulose from wood or other plant material. The dissolved cellulose is then converted into an insoluble gelatinous gel which is then extruded as a cellulose fiber. That fiber is then used to make rayon fabrics. In the case of so called bamboo fabrics, the only role for bamboo is that it is used as the plant material from which the cellulose is extracted.

Whatever they are made from they are cool, comfortable and last. What is more I havent has a single case of fungus since wearing these socks.

Another vote for Darn Tough socks. No need for liner socks. I know alot of people have made the switch from Smartwool after trying Darn Toughs.

I've been wearing the Darn Tough Midweight Hiking Socks year around. They are Merino wool, fit right, and just last. I also have SmartWool but the Darn Tough seems to wear better. They aren't cheap - about $25 a pair - but they are worth it.

Same here, once I started wearing Darn Tough, I haven't bought another pair of Smart Wool. I also wear wool not matter the weather, 110 or -10 wool is my choice.

I had athlete's foot more times than I can count when I was a kid and it can be pure agony. I would wear whatever I had to if I still had that problem.

Darn Tough light-weight or mid-weight wool socks are the only way to go, in my opinion. Cotton socks are horrible. Cotton retains moisture. Wool will help keep your feet dry, and comfortable. I wear wool socks year round, regardless of the type of boot, tennis shoe, or dress shoe I'm wearing. The only time I'm not wearing wool, is when I have on sandals while traveling around Viet Nam or Indonesia

Here's a tip that few men will be brave enough to try. If you are doing multi day, continuous and strenuous walking and especially with new boots, wear women's nylon ankle length sheer stockings as a liner. I also fully endorse merino wool as the main stocking material. The nylon liners have worked well for me during hunts at home in Saskatchewan, in the the Yukon mountains, and the deserts of Namibia, and points in- between. And about 2,400 km while on pilgrimage in Spain.
The women's nylon stockings act as the thick skin that you don't have, until you do. Forming a slippery, tough barrier between your feet and your socks. They prevent blisters. They don't cause any inconvenience. They don't absorb moisture. Carry two pair, rinse and dry over night.

I really like redwing acrylic wool blend socks. I wear them all the time even when it 100. They also have a lifetime warranty.

I’ll echo what other have said regarding merino wool. I wear them 365. The key to comfort in both heat and cold is moisture wicking. I have also found them to be durable.
