What Are Your Alternative Plans?

I'm taking a son-in-law to Montana in late October for a wilderness elk/deer hunt with Rising Son Outfitters. I also applied for a Wyoming moose tag and will find out in early May if I drew a tag. I only have 18 preference points, so it's borderline if I draw. Hopefully it all works out. Perhaps back to Africa in 2021.

June in Namibia looks to be about a 1% chance, so we are discussing dates for 2021.

An immediate alternative is Minnesota archery turkey hunting. My extra time over the last month has been shooting arrows. My son and I both tagged turkey already! Friends still have tags so we will continue to bow hunt as long as we can.

All summer plans are uncertain, we are expecting limited travel so the lake cabin will get heavy use.
The fall will be my regular trips out west. I’d like to add wisconsin and/or Iowa... anyone know a guy?
With our Namibia hunt being postponed, I’m looking for a father son hunt in the US in December or January. I’ll take any ideas! (And follow this thread)
You are welcome to give my a shout. I’d be glad to help if I can.

Who was your outfitter?

I have a Leopard/Buffalo scheduled for Zim in August, crossing my fingers that I can still go.

Alternative plans if I can not go is to reschedule for next year and look at NA mountain lion/bear hunts in the fall.
Was going with Wayne, @Nyamazana Safaris. Will still be going, just have to figure out when!

Still no changes for us, but watching closely. Trip to Bots in planned for mid Jun. Tickets were purchased (Qatar Air) before everything closed. Still booked and Qatar Air has offered to reschedule or refund in full. Still thinking maybe 50/50 it might go.

Next trip to Bots is still on for this Aug. One guy is booked and the other two of us are in a holding pattern and will book as soon as things open. If both crap out, same trips will just roll to 2021.

I'm still hopeful that things will still get open in time to make at least 1/2 a season for everyone.

I think Botswana is shutdown for 6 months past the end of April.

https://allafrica.com/stories/202004070795.html

From the Article:
Leaders of different opposition political parties have opined that the extension of the state of emergency from 21 days to six months is reasonable considering the need for the country to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The leaders expressed their agreement with the state of emergency after a meeting with President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi and Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane, who were representing the governing Botswana Democratic Party as well as cabinet ministers and health specialists.

Francistown South Member of Parliament, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi, who is the vice president of the Alliance for Progressives told the press briefing at the end of the closed door meeting that he was convinced of the merits of the move.

Thanks Tanks. Yep I'm aware, but I also got a message from one of my friends who lives there that the "internal" lock downs are are going to be "relaxed" on 30 Apr. Not that the country is going to open to foreigners, just "relaxed" internally and he didn't define "relaxed" either.

I know up to this point, just to drive from their house 0n Sass Post (name of their property) to the store to get food, fuel and supplies, they had to apply for an actual permit. Hopefully, it's at least a small step forward as tight as it's locked down now, they (country) won't survive 6-months.

Cancelled Namibia for 6 chaps this year. Some of us are going to Scotland on the hinds. Just means I must get a bit fitter.

Mark, that's a GREAT idea. My wife and I went to Edinburgh Scotland for New Years a couple of years ago. Couple of days before we left, I actually looked into doing a stag hunt with a place there. Would have been just a 1-day hunt but was about a 4hr drive each way. We had two of our nephews with us and the logistics and nearly 3-days out of the trip just didn't work out.

We did take a "Whisky" tour that made a stop at a NP up in the Highlands for a lunch break and we could hear the stags bugling in the distance. Was very surprised as it was so late in the year. Need to think about doing that as a dedicated trip with just the two of us for New Year's again. Hhuummmm.

I have done New Year's trips as well as others to Gleneagles Hotel right outside of Edinburg. There is even a train that goes there and in Winter time great views when going by rail (not bad in the Summer either).

Scotland and that hotel is one of my favorite places to visit. I still have so of the 25 and 50 year old Macallans I had brought home from there.

We stayed right in "Old Town" on the "Royal Mile" maybe 500m down the hill from the castle. They had the Christmas Market and all that going on at the bottom of the hill. Other than on the chilly and wet side for us Florida types we had a blast.

Just mentioned it to her as an alternate if the June trip craps out and in was an immediate, YES!

We have been hunting/stalking in Scotland for a few years now ,2 trips on stags in the rut and 4 or 5 times on the hinds. Stalking hinds is very challenging but very affordable with no shot fee. Stags in the rut is just magical. It is very hard to say what I like best Africa or Scotland love them both for different reasons.

As regards hunting or travelling away from my home country, I regard 2020 as a complete bust. Most of 2021 is probably a bust also, but maybe some hope in the second half of 2021.
Activities around home are currentlt curtailed by C19 lockdown, but it's still possible do some stuff, although at a reduced level.

No big trips planned for me this year, but COVID-19 has put a trip to Zimbabwe 2021 on hold until the situation becomes clearer, both for travel and for our retirement investment portfolio. We were very close to booking a trip for elephant and eland when the seriousness of the current situation became more obvious. As worrisome as this is for a traveler, I can't imagine how stressful the travel restrictions must be for the outfitters and PH's employed in the hunting industry. "Interesting" times indeed.
My reloaded ammunition stash has certainly grown a lot lately, and spring has slowly returned here. I'll be entertaining myself with more shooting sessions on my private range just for fun and for "dangerous game shooting" training. As soon as local travel becomes practical again, I will spend some time at our bush camp, doing the usual spring maintenance of clearing deadfall off the trails and controlling the beavers damming and flooding land around the creeks. Put up a few bird nesting boxes, Perhaps hunt black bears while there. So we do have something to look forward to in the meantime.
I'm sure we all hope this disease runs its course sooner rather than later and with minimal long term consequences. Best wishes to all the fine folks employed in tourism.

Our plans have not changed severely as of yet for this year.

I just spoke to my source in NY for amazing Brown and Lake Trout fishing, he says we are good.
Wife and I are planning a trip there for the week beginning on Memorial Day.
Also in NY, Turkey is still in season...although have to see if the Toms are calling or not.

I'll report back, hopefully with pics of Trout and Turkey.

Same old day to day routine here. Walked by the dog AM and PM and my daily workout. Gotta keep these old bones moving. Went out the other day and cut a load of firewood. Catching up on some reloading even though I don't need any more ammo right now but it's something to do with empty brass. A mtn bike ride occasionally with the kids.
My next hunt is for April 2021 in RSA. I have only a small deposit on it now. This bs should be settled by then. Meanwhile, lots of practice off sticks.

Made it to a friends house in Upstate NY for a week of fishing and hunting.
On Sunday 24 May, we woke up well before daybreak for Turkey Hunting.
We spent several hours in the blind trying to call in the birds...no luck.
Back to the house for some breakfast and headed to the reservoir for the fish.
We were later than normal arriving, most everybody was leaving because of the wind.
I say that because there are no motors allowed and only rowing can be challenging in the wind.
We headed out, even though the fishermen who were leaving said they weren't biting.

Side note about my friend and his Lake Trout fishing setup...
Typical 12' aluminum row boat with 2 sets of handmade (by him) oars.
Depth/Fish Finder to assist with finding the tricky buggers.
Professional sliding rowing seat that was adapted from a skulling rig to his set up.
2 rods with lead core line and we had it out about 270 feet to fish about 40-60 feet.
2 rods with heavy weights (like a downrigger set up) with several leaders at 15 foot intervals.
Those "Poor Man's Downrigger" is where we got all our fish and they were right on the bottom.
Only the bottom hooks picked up any fish.

Back to fishing...
We had bites as we were rowing out to his normal fishing area, fighting a 10mph wind.
He did the setup in the back of the boat while I started to get us in position.
We are seeing fish on the FF and they are all deep, about 5-10 feet from the bottom.
The bottom of this reservoir is around 140-165 near the middle.
We continue to row then BAM on the downrigger...a 4# Laker.
We row around and right near the same spot we got the first one...BAM a 5# Laker.
Now we are dialed in and in the next 2 hours we land 2 more, one of them a wicked fat 6.5# fish.
We were on the lake for about 5 hours total and the wind has died down to almost nothing.
Getting kinda hot and we are a little tired from a long day so we leave to process the fish.

A short drive to another stream for the picture and to clean & fillet the fish.
Back at the house they get vacuum sealed and tossed in the freezer.
When Mrs BeeMaa and I get home, they will get brined and smoked.
We give some of the fish away to friends and family as gifts.
Here's a picture of myself with the fish just before cleaning.

The wife and I will be in NY for a week or so, heading back next weekend.
She will most certainly get her chance in the boat soon.
My friend has boats on 3 reservoirs, each one has a very similar setup.
Ironically, he's allergic to eating fish!

Two years ago I rode my motorcycle up here for 3 days of nonstop fishing.
Came home with 50# of Brown Trout in my Yeti bag cooler.
We were fishing the Pepacton Reservoir that time and he was dialed in.

Mrs BeeMaa and I show up to row the boat and reel in the fish.
He's already done all the hard scouting work and it makes it easy for us.
It's good to have a friend like this.

I hope you all enjoy Memorial Day and take a few moments to reflect on its true meaning.
As a veteran myself, I know I will be doing so and thinking of those who gave all for this country.
Cheers to the ones who didn't come home.
