What are your not-negotiables for a rifle?

The P14 and M17 also achieve this requirement. I find the P14 & M17 safety easier to access than a bolt shroud mounted 3 position safety.
I think the P14/M17 safety does indeed lock the bolt closed on safe, but I think on safe it blocks the sear rather than the firing pin. I may be wrong. I am not completely familiar with that particular design. Perhaps the cock on close design allows a safety so configured to control the cocking piece? I looked it up and sources don’t seem to agree. I don’t have one of these rifles to examine personally. Further clarification from anyone with one of these rifles would be appreciated. Best regards

The 1917, P-14 and Remington 30 Express safety absolutely controls the cocking piece directly. The safety engages the cocking piece, retracting it rearwards away from the sear. The notch circled is where the hook on the safety lever engages the cocking piece. Same whether COC or COO.

That is a clever design. I can see why people like it. Thanks for the clarification.

I dont think I have any non negotiables other than I want a rifle that is reliable.. if I cant get it to feed and function reliably, its got to go..

Ive owned a really wide variety of firearms over the years ranging from single shots to semi autos.. CRF, and push feed, blued/walnut and stainless/synthetic, etc.. etc.. and have enjoyed them all.. it doesn't matter if we're talking an entry level gun like a Ruger American or a nicer rifle like one of my Christensens or something even nicer like one of my customs.. they've all served a purpose.. and all brought me joy at some point in time or another..

There are certainly some I have enjoyed more than others.. and certainly certain requirements I have for certain types of shooting or hunting (Im not going to take a push feed on a DG hunt.. and Im not going to take one of my typical "Texas deer blind" guns on a spot and stalk hunt out west where a 400 yard shot might be possible)..

but when its all said and done, Im pretty happy trying just about anything out and haven't found a true non negotiable item that I simply must have or must not have on a firearm..

I just checked the P14 military clunker my late wife inherited in my gunsafe and can confirm this. I can also confirm it is by FAR the most difficult safety I have encountered to operate. Very stiff!! Even more difficult than military Mauser or Springfield design. Perhaps converting to cock on opening might make a difference?

Bob, would you happen to know if the Savage 110’s safety also blocks the trigger sear like the Browning? I only found that out about the Browning from someone posting on here about a year ago.
@CoElkHunter
One position locks the bolt and the sear, the middle position blocks the sear but the bolt can be cycled to unload
Final position is fire.

@Ontario Hunter
Please don't convert to cock on opening.
It can upset the safety and makes the rifle slower to operate. Pull the safety apart give it a clean up and a polish then apply a small amount of grease and it will be as slick as snot on glass.
It's a little right as you said because it moves the firing pin back slightly but man o man it's positive and no chance of it accidentally coming off

@62flint
The 243 is the greatest wounding calibre I have ever come across.
To big for small game, not big enough for medium game
Doesn't live up to Winchesters hype.
I have had to finish off more game shot with one than I care to count.
To me it may be fine for paper targets but for hunting leave it at home unless you load it with bullets that match the game which most in Australia don't.
I hate it with a passion.
Bob
I have used the 243 cousin the 6mm Remington
And have had good luck with it
But I do use good bullets
And the deer are small in fl but o have take big hogs with it

Are the 2 interchangeable?????
It’s the same thing Russ, lots of people call it the 6-08 just to mess with the minds of the diehards, over on AHN , halfbreed (Terry owns one) and I had some idiot having a tantrum about it, even more so when someone said "6mm….equals.243…think about it ". It’s the small things that make life enjoyable at times.
The thing to remember with the "6-08" is to use the appropriate projectile for the chosen target
I personally would get a 242 vickers if I wanted a 6mm, old English class(y)
Gumpy

Thanks, I had not seen posts or Banter about the 6mm-08 previously.

Well aware the .243 is only the .308 little brother and come from the same family of case size.

With a .260 and 7mm-08 in the middle I really like the 7mm-08 and used mine a lot.

I think it needs a bit of lubrication, if maintained they operate like silk.

Mate! l was trying to be funny! I was in on the joke! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

@Badboymelvin
No they aren't interchangeable.
One absolute garbage the other is just a piece of crap.
Both useless.
Ha Ha Ha Ha

Absolutely disagree 100%

But hey, that's why ice cream is made in vanilla, strawberry and chocolate! (y)

And nuts, there are nuts in ice cream too.

If ya keep at him he might change his tune on .243

Maybe Bob would just go straight to 6.5 creedmoor being its closer to .25

Nuts in ice cream is an absolute non-negotiable. I’m definitely more picky about that than the CRF debate.
Gotta take a stand somewhere.

Mate,
Speaking of the .25's they have never appealed to me at all...
In all the rifle's l've ever owned l've only ever had a couple of .25's...
One was a .303-25 built on a Arisaka action that was the absolute biggest POS I've ever owned and couldn't wait until it was out of my safe - but the other was nice.
It was a Weatherby Deluxe in .257Wby and l loaded the Nosler Partition 100gn to 3500fps and while it was nice, it didn't really give me the fizz so down the road it went.
I just personally don't get the .25's... much prefer the more compact .243 or one of various .270's which are just... better.
I may be a little biased as l live in Victoria and Sambar are one of my main quarry - and the .25's are not legal for Sambar.
But they do nothing for me and if they do it for you all the more power to you (y)

Russ
