I'm sorry that my Aussie friends have so many problems with Winchester. There are way more Winchesters in my safes than any other make and in my opinion for good reason. The Model 70 wasn't given the nickname of "The Rifleman's Rifle" for nothing.

It is not a typo as far as I know, having the data from the printed source, but it may be that there was still development work being done with the cartridge during those two years and that Jeffery may have been influenced to a certain extent by Rigby turning the rim off the 450-400 to make the 450/400J Rimless and seating the bullet out further to increase COAL by the 0.1770 would have effectively increased case capacity and allowed for a increase in velocity. Getting a reliable rimless bolt rifle dangerous game cartridge had big marketing consequences so every improvement would have been taken advantage of.

Well 3.3530" would have certainly reduced the amount of mods needed to get it to fit in a standard action. On the other hand the amount of metal removed from the action on rifles built in the 1905-1907 Time Frame makes me believe that OAL never made it to production.

The problem is nothing to do with the Winchester product, In fact own 2 of the "new" range of Model 70s-3006 Sporter and a 375H&H Safari and I rate them highly!

The problem lies with the Australian Distributor- Winchester Australia(who also distribute a range of other lines- such as CZ and browning) Their service is woeful, product knowledge is poor. I remember one SHOT show here in Perth, they had 3 M70s!!! This was the Australia wide distributor at our only MAJOR show bringing 3 models to view! As a result the product has not gained the market share it deserves. If Winshitter wanted they could actively target the Tikka/Sako brands with the M70 but for some reason have no desire to do so.

If any one from Winchester US reads this- Winchester Australia really tarnishes the Winchester Name.

I believe Browning and Winchester are seperate subsidiaries of Fabrique National Herstal which is in turn owned by Herstal Holdings Group.

Now everything is clear. Being from the States where Winchester, Remington CZ etc. offer their own lines of firearms. I had no idea that Winchester was importing CZ(s) into Australia. I have a CZ 550 in 404 Jeffery that came out of their custom shop with extra fancy wood and just recently purchased a Winchester Classic that has been converted to 404 Jeffery. The Winchester's wood is just their standard stuff, but it should make a good working rifle. Haven't seen it yet, but hope to some time next week.

You have to admit though, that is one ugly rifle! No walnut, no blue and a MUZZLE BRAKE!

@Shootist43...Fortunately for me, I have owned my RSM .404J for nearly two years and took it to Africa last summer. But for the sake of the many members wanting to become .404 owners, I truly hope you are right....and fully agree with you on the Alaska comment.

I was just thinking about "The Colorado Buck" rifle, the weight made me think the gun was made for sheep hunting i.e. carrying it up and down mountains. With that as a given I can certainly see the need for the muzzle brake.
