What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

I don't think its necessary lol most safari are guided ,Except you just want to look cool

If in cool you mean self reliant, independent than yes I want to look cool ;)

I would kick my own ass if I ever had to ask someone what time it is. Or can I borrow your knife.

The same guys that say they don’t need to wear a watch because they have their phone. but then feel perfectly comfortable asking me what time it is because they’re too lazy to dig their phone out of their pocket.

Whenever a man asks me to borrow my knife I look at him like someone I would have to take care of in any emergency. He is generally unprepared in life. And a liability

I would like to carry a knife everyday as well; however, this brings me to raise a gripe about men’s pant pockets. They have NOT evolved along side technology and modern day needs.

I cannot seem to comfortably fit a pocket knife with a pocket clip, a wallet with all of the necessary cards, many of which are now metal, the big electronic key for my car, and this giant ipad of a phone in two normal front pockets.

I cant safely keep any of it in my back pocket, and the front pockets are so shallow and narrow that I cant access my wallet if there is a knife in the pocket, and the knife cracks the glass on the phone if I keep those two in the pocket together. Meanwhile, I still am always offered a coin pocket in most pants which is pointless.

I am a Luddite at heart, and miss the days of rotary phones that stayed at home and a money clip with cash and a driver’s license.

I could comfortably carry a useful knife back then.
@franzfmdavis: I have always carried my wallet in my Back pocket — and I carry a very Fat wallet…fits in all pants from jeans to dress pants or hunting pants. My pocket knife is carried in a front pocket and occasionally i use a “clip” and it rides attached but inside top of the front pocket. The only time I’ve ever lost a pocket knife is the “clip-type” as they can pop out. I can comfortably carry folding knives with 3” to 3 1/4” blades in front pocket, the longer 4” blade folders are bulky inside a pocket and those I prefer a Clip on or belt sheath. Obviously all straight knives are worn on belt sheath. If you can fit a car key fob or cell phone in your pocket - most knives should fit too….if not then get rid of your Car !

@Altitude sickness - there are a few Hunters like @daxter11 that don’t carry a knife even while hunting and they are sometimes Women or a man that rarely hunts alone, doesn’t know how to sharpen a knife and requires others to do basic things for them. These Hunters may view their Guide or PH as a “Caretaker” one that will lead them to game, prevent discomfort, and handle any problems that could arise. I prefer Not to hunt with these folks as they also tend to be “complainers”. In fairness - there are some that might Not be as I described and perhaps Dexter 11 is one of them—-could be a very good guy.
Like You, I want to be prepared and also take care of as many things on a Guided hunt as I would on my DIY hunts. If you have to ask “whether to carry a knife” you’re unlikely to understand the answer. For me, a Guided hunt is rare, it’s to find game in an area or Country I’m unfamiliar with and possibly where I’m required by law to use a Guide. On these Guided hunts I try to learn as much as possible and help where I can.

I don’t want to besmirch anyone for not carrying a knife. There is a high percentage of the population that probably should not carry a knife.

But as someone posted above just the minor chore of digging a bullet out from the off hide. I would be embarrassed to stand there like a lump and ask somebody else to do it like they are my employee instead of a teammate on a hunt.

I also hunt primarily alone and unguided.

@Altitude sickness - Agree… and hopefully my post was taken by All with some “humor” and did Not “besmirch” anyone.—-just like I don’t get offended if someone thinks I wear a knife to “look cool” (I wish I was “Cool”).

Today’s carry, to walk outside and retrieve a groundhog I shot last evening, Feed the horse, get the trash down by the road. and go get a cutting torch O2 bottle re filled. Sometimes my EDC changes. But these are what are going out and about this AM

Bark River bird and trout and a Queen pocket knife.

5.11 Tactical cargo pants. Either cotton canvas or ripstop polyester. Plenty of pockets for everything and reinforced front slash pockets for a knife clip. I wore the cotton pants to Africa and have worn them ever since. I don’t wear jeans any longer as they have limited storage space and I don’t like sitting on my wallet.
