What Size Animals Should One Target On A Hunt In South Africa

I think royal wants to start scoring zebra so he will come over when you get it home and measure each stripe. Goal is to get over 800 inches of black stripe when adding the length of each stripe together.

Call SCI. It's the newest category

All these measurement systems confuse me, we have the R/W, SCI and now the RSM (Royal Strip Measurment). I think the RSM should apply to all striped plains game not just Zebras.

Please send your ph a request for a zebra that will measure high in this new system. You must post the answer here for us all to laugh. LOL

Bill, thanks for the the info, this will really help me with my expectation on my safari this August. An advice on Zebra?

I took 3 Zebra last year. They were a blast to stalk/hunt. In my mind, it's all about the hunt, as long as you take a mature animal.

This was the single most memorable hunt of my entire trip...and I would not want to go back to Africa without hunting Zebra!

I don't think 30" nyala are frequently shot. KZN is a good place to hunt for them, but it's far from a guarantee. You usually have to earn it. The biggest I've taken is 25" and that was in the East Cape. I will be looking for a older and larger one in the coming years.

Well taking a 30" nyala is like taking a 60" kudu. They are not taken in big numbers but they are taken. That is why I said that size is so special but I have it as my goal in my head. I may need to take a few before I reach that goal but I will just need to deal with that. LOL :)

WE all like to hunt and enjoy hunting I myself see nothing wrong with having goals you want to hunt for along the way. If I ever take a 30" nyala or a 60" kudu will I stop hunting. The answer is no but my own goal I set for myself will have been reached. The goal does not ruin hunting for me or take the joy out of it.

This year I see a 28"nyala or a kudu over 53" I will be hunting it to try and take it. I could also walk across a 26" nyala or a 50" kudu I just must have because of how it all happens. At the same time I would pass on a 28" nyala like I did last trip because we drove right by them and it would have been a 20 yd shot from the truck and that is not what I want.

I agree Bill that how you take it or hunt difficulty is more important than size, I will take smaller animals if I can get them with my recurve than if I use my wheel bow. My waterbuck is only 25.5 but I would rather have it than a 28 with my compound. That said, I like hunting with both weapons!

What Size Animals Should One Target On A Hunt In South Africa?

I really looked at this as a question this go round: Any damned size you are happy with.

So true but it nice when you get a good one.

I know my list will help a few new guys have a better idea though.

@billc I leave on my first safari in 75 days and I helped me. Like everyone else who responded to this thread I would rather take an old bull with smaller head gear than a young stud in his prime, they didn't get old by being stupid and generally make for a more challenging hunt. Don't get me wrong if my PH leads me on a good stalk and puts me in comfortable range of a record book animal I'm not going to pass up.

I'm just looking for a huge warthog. I actually prize a HUGE warthog above a lot of species. I guess I have to hunt an area that isn't pressured.

I think a big tusk warthog has become one of the harder to get trophies in SA. Plenty of pigs around but those giant tusked ones are hard to come by.

So, which of these Kudu looks like it might fit the bill?
(Don't pay any attention to the feeders, Boma or fences they can be released anywhere.)

This Impala looks pretty good to.

Personally, this is the one that gets me interested. :E Shocked:

Brick that first kudu looks like it has some deep curls...I like the looks of that one, no idea what it scores.

Just looked at the Kudu pics. I'd pass and wait for a more mature animal :A Bonk::A Bonk:

Really appreciate the discussion guys, I land in Africa in a little over 5 weeks and can't wait, these figures are good for a guide for me but to be honest I'd rather stalk a 50 inch Kudu for a couple of hours than shoot a 66 inch fella 3 steps from a vehicle. If I'm hunting and feel like I'm experiencing Africa then I'll be happy if I feel like I'm culling animals then I won't. The best trophy I have on the wall is a 3x5 red stag that was shot and wounded by the gentleman hunting with me and I tracked him down and finished him a kilometre or so away. And I have a really nice 6x6 next to him. It's all about the hunt for me.
