What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

@baxterb

If I wear it every day it seems to lose about 1-2 minutes over a week, which is within their spec.

I rarely wear it for a week straight anyway so accept that I'll be resetting it each time I wear it.

Will probably end up getting a winder one day I suppose.
The Seiko 5's are easy enough to adjust if you want more accuracy. You'll need something to pull the case back, but Youtube has tutorials and they're cheap enough that it's no great heartbreak if you cock it up. Plus there's no water resistance to speak of, so no worries about that either.

The one I referenced:

You can find various smartphone apps to get the readings. I used 'Watch Accuracy Meter'.

Mine was about -30seconds a day out the box, now I've fiddled with it and it's been consistently -5/day since. I could probably do better, but it's now good enough that I can just tweak it every couple of months (or just rest it on its side overnight if it's too far behind) which is fine for my purposes.

All in all, the Seiko 5 is not the most accurate piece out there, but they're pretty robust and the design philosophy is cool if you like good engineering solutions. Plus they look pretty nice and they're fantastic value.

Some if you may get this…..some will not

@Lone Star Bluegrass - I've long liked the Willard.

I'm a bit tempted at the moment, the green variant SPB153 is on special at a retailer here for AU$950 (~US$620).

I'm still on the fence - for that coin, one could have both a normal Turtle SRPE93K and a Laco Aachen.

If they were that price in my AO it’d already be in my inventory! Life is short—behave accordingly.

I understand you enthusiasm for technology. I would not dissuade you using such items to track your steps, count your heartbeats or GPS your location. They are useful tools.

However, at some point you will come to realize that an Omega Planet Ocean or Rolex Submariner will long outlast microprocessors and batteries. That an automatic/mechanical movement is beautiful for it's simplicity and accuracy. And that daily use (and abuse) will only strengthen the bond you have with it. Every scratch will be earned, every ding remembered. If you are lucky enough, a son or daughter (or maybe grandchildren) will see you wearing it every day on your wrist and it will inspire them as well. Watches of this quality are generational heirlooms.

Nothing against your technology, but there's a world beyond it. Don't limit yourself based on price alone. There are ways to get into a top quality timepiece without a second mortgage.

Yeah...but as I think I put on here or another thread I wounded my breitling titanium seawolf big time....it took some serious hammering over many years....so plenty of dings etc ...sent my friend back where I come from a photo of it...he said don't wear it anymore the spindles holding the dial in place are broken...if you wear it you will seriously damage it....well I took that to heart and forgot about it.....when was back year before last took it on to him and it had to go back to breitling for a total rebuild...think they need to give me their watches to field test... :E Big Grin: ...well picked it up last year when was back over my sons bday....now it had a new strap...new glass ...and presumably a new face....so was basically a new watch ...the bill was not cheap...also forgot to say took the madams breitling back as well as she had somehow managed to bugger up the minute hand which freewheeled around the face when it felt like it....this is it looking bit cockeyed....as it was like new and my my sons bday when there I gave it to him.....he likes his watches ....

This is what's great about a quality timepiece, longevity despite downright abuse. Nearly infinitely rebuildable. A generational heirloom that will be cherished over and over.

Congratulations on the battle scars won to both you and your bride. May you have many more. Cheers.

EDIT - My father wore a 1974 Omega Speedmaster as an airline mechanic for nearly 20 years. When he cracked the sapphire crystal and damaged the face, it was in dire need of repair. My mother had it sent back to Switzerland for a complete rebuild. This watch now sees very little use but still bears a few marks given to it by the airline. This is "the one" that sparked my interest in watches as a kid.

Mark my words the 1st gen Apple Watch will be collectible, people will laugh at its simplistic capabilities in a few years. And that will make it collectible :p

Like 1st gen computer games, 1st gen G shocks are over $1000

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.
