Went in to a local gun shop I regular and the owner got a hold of a handful of rifles in an estate. Included in those are cz550 9.3x62, a cz550 .375 h&h, and a cz550 .458 win mag. They are all at great prices and I have enough set aside for 1 of them. I already have a Ruger Hawkeye African in 9.3x62, but that is the largest rifle I own. I do not have any dangerous game hunts planned in the near future, but I would like to purchase one of them. Which one would be recommended?

For DG in the future 375.
For investment, as they are not going any cheaper in the future, all three. Sell them in 5 or ten years.

It all depends on what DG:

IMO:

Buffalo, at close range - .458 - for more than more than 75M - .375
Lion - .375
Leopard - .375
Rhino (pipe dream) - .458
Elephant - .458

Croc - .375
Hippo - .458

Basically, for distance or a precise shot, or not a very large animal, I would go with a .375.

If you can smell them - .458

Get the 375H&H and the 458WM. I know...it's a lot of money, but it will pay off in the end. These are out of production and finding a double square bridge, CRF rifle for less than $2K each is unheard of. Arguably the best deal going in this category. Yes, they may need a little work, but still a steal.

Your firearms purchase will pay off better than any stock market investment. Even if it's just for the memories you have hunting with them. Worth it.

Borrow and buy all 3...wait 6 months and put for sale at 2.5 times what you bought for...then go buy a rifle of you choice....a nice 416 rigby..... anything but a bloody 375...you have a lovely 9.3x62 so sorted ..... :A Thumbs Up: :D Beers:

From a practical perspective...

If you love your 9.3x62 and intend to keep it, there is no point getting a .375 H&H; they are essentially twins.

A .458 Win gets you into a different category: the stopper calibers. Do not believe those who pooh pooh the .458 Win based on circa 1960's horror stories of compressed loads of Olin ball powder cooking under the African sun and producing squib loads the bounced back on DG skin. Those issues, while occasionally true - there were reliably documented cases - have been resolved for 50 years. Today's .458 Win loads are just as reliable as anything else, and, truth be told, as good as the original .458 Lott loads. So, if you can only get one, get the .458 :)

What I would suggest however, is that you think long and hard about the concept of identical ergonomics, and IF the CZ 550 fits you well (?), it would make a lot of sense to buy both .375 and .458 and to sell your 9.3x62. There are endless advantages to getting a medium and a heavy that share the same ergonomics.

Come on pascal .....French and practical don't mix ....;)....go with my realism..:A Banana::A Thumbs Up:

You said they’re at a great price, but didn’t mention a price. Are they the deal you think they are? American or Hog Back stocks, condition, feeding, caliber, etc. all play a part in value. Easy to buy. Harder to sell.

That being said, if they are in good condition and truly a good deal: .458, then the .375.

You already have the 9.3 so I would just jump to the 458, you can work with loads that mimic a 45/70 up to full 458 DG level in the 458.

That said if you don't want the other two what is the name of the dealer as there are more than one of us here that will buy the other two.
