Who is chasing the spiral horn slam?

I have some of them, my most prized is my sitatunga taken in Botswana in 1990. Agree with RedLeg, about the so called 'slam' that doesnt include several of the species.
I wont ever complete a real slam, but do have basic eland, kudu, bushbuck, sitatunga and nyala.

I'm not chasing any slams, but I do like the spiral horned antelope, and somewhat pick my hunting areas with them in mind.

Sitatunga is one that I would like to hear more about from those who have hunted them. I've been researching bongo BUT those sitatunga (swamp not forest variety) are pretty interesting. I would like to do one in the next few years.

I am by no means experienced in hunting spirals or Africa in general. I went on my first safari this last July and got my first one, a Livingston eland. I think I am hooked, and I am hoping to make it back in 2026 in order to get a buff and kudu to continue to try and get the SA spiral slam. I am young and have big goals for hunting and one of those it to hunt all the eland and bushbuck species. Probably a long shot as most of the species require a lot of cash and travel, but I young man can dream right? lol Anyways I am sure that I am like most people and would sell a kidney to hunt a LDE, bongo, sitatunga, or a mountain nyala but is definitely a tough milestone for the average joe.

Awesome! Hey no comparisons here between all of our different experiences. I think it's fantastic that you got to Africa while young...and are making a plan as they say. That plan will adjust as you get different opportunities but to chase eland and/or bushbuck sub-species is a huge goal. Keep us posted how it's going and you will have a bunch of us cheering you on.

Loved reading your hunt report and the Okavango is a special place. Did you ever go back and get the lion? Reading about the croc and mokoro reminds me of seeing a mokoro bit in half by a hippo one time. I didn't see the actual event but saw the after effects and it was pretty sobering.

No, that was my one attempt for lion. I blew it and after that it became unaffordable. It was a fantastic hunt though, even with a cranky old PH like Willie Engelbrecht.

Well at least you made a good effort. I was talking recently with a PH friend who had a client wound a lion on bait...it came back...and he wounded it again!!!! No recovery. Wow.

Now that would hurt!! I missed mine so at least it wasnt a wounding I had to pay for. Just flubbed it, it happens.
Up until then I had been shooting very well, near the end of the hunt, had pretty much given up on the lion, then blew it, LOL.

For the RSA spiral horn slam I only need a nyala to finish it. I would like to add a LDE to the group. In the mean time I'll be planning on finishing out on the color phases of springbok, blesbok, impala, and wildebeest.

This is a great example of why this is NOT an upper crust topic. Anyone coming back to Africa can go after something cool like a color variation or another sub-species...get that done and you can pick more of the same or something different like a stretch goal of a LDE or sitatunga. This isn't just a rich guy's sport. I'm just a regular guy but love focusing to hit some of these goals. Any goal can be worthwhile and interesting.

I was riding in a client's new Tahoe the other day and said hey, nice Tahoe. What are they going for these days. His answer...80k! That's not really news anymore but guess who is going to put some more miles on their truck that has been paid off for a few years to do some more hunting!

I never focused on all spiral horns. However enjoyed adventuring after the four subspecies of sitatunga. Also, all legal to hunt subspecies of bushbuck. Along the way I guess i collected the spiral horned animals. I have been a lucky man
